If the top of the plats are dry on a battery is the battery no good. Will it hold a charge. One is 1/4" other is 1/2".

Will it hold a charge depends on a lot of factors besides water level. Why is the water level low is the place to start, is the level low due to boil over or neglect ? Add distilled water just slightly over the top of the plates. Put battery on charge and watch it to see if the water/acid is boiling over or not. If it is the battery is most likely junk. If the battery charges up then adjust water level and continue to monitor.

Thanks. Batteries have sat 2 years on smart charger due to fact we can not get to boat due to covid. Live in Canada and keep boat in US. Until August this year you had to go to covid hotel when you returned to Canada at a rate of 2000 for 3 nights so we did not go to boat. So saved 6000 so can buy new batteries.
