To all the dog owners that take your dogs out with you

Have you trained your dog to go to the toilet on the boat? If so what do you do, what have you set up.

Our bloke is fully housetrained, will go the whole night and wouldn't dream of disgracing himself

When we are out on the boat, we don't always have the luxury of being next to a beach or a river bank where he can go. So he ends up holding I an holding it until he basically just bursts, this is when he is swimming off the back of the boat.

Have been trying to teach him that the swim platform is ok to go, so I can bucket it, hose it straight off, but so far no go.

Been thinking about this for my old man's boy, Harry. Have been thinking a square of fake grass....

Thanks for that, we have a mat on board we bought, but hadn't been able to get him to use it.

Since there is no snow in Sydney, I guess method 2 of scenting it is going to be the go. Wife and daughter refused, so I guess it's me

Our Poodle Terrier mix has been "house trained" to use a puppy training pad since he was little. It started when he was a puppy and used to sleep in a large dog crate that I had a low partition that he could easily climb over and go on a training pad. As he got older and did not sleep in the crate he kept going back to the crate to use the same spot. Eventually removed the crate altogether and he still uses training pads or newspaper at home or on the boat. I love not having to take him out on cold or wet mornings.

Max, are rat terrier, took a whole day to figure out on a house boat trip he had to get in a small boat in the evening to go to shore before we turned in for the night. The following day he just jump in the water to go take care of business. Because of the house boat trip we went out and bought the 230wk . In the rare occasion if Max would need to go out at home he would wake us up and go to the door. The first over nighter on are 230 Wk he woke us up then went to the only door which was the head and when you opened the door he would look up at you in confusion . Then he figured out the way to narvana was out the transom door.

At one boat show a dog person had a talk about how to train your dog to go on a boat. She had a male dog that would not do it. Her solution was to bring on an other male dog that was trained to go on a boat. It went on comand and instantly her dog went over and did his thing in the same spot. Boy dogs are terirtorial even when neutered was her comment. Get a cat they know what to do some times.

LOL, my husband said in our family he could see it would be him too:)

Boats going in tomorrow @ 9am. Just came back from the yacht club to leave my truck there for a ride home. Brought the dog along to the yc with me. He got out and immediately ran down the ramp and 300 ft to our slip looking for the boat. And some people say dogs forget, not. My dog has more intelligence than some people I know.

I know many fellow boat owners that would sell there boat before leaving the dog home, myself included. :smt089

Yep, this boat was bought for the family, he is part of it. As soon as I pick up the boat bag, Bum (sorry fanny) bag that i keep with engine keys, door key, marina pass, etc etc. He is on excitement until we get in the car, every set of traffic lights we stop at, he is up looking to see if we are there yet.

It really has become our Sunday afternoon boat outing. pul up a mooring or drop the anchor, by which time he has generally lifted his ball out of storage and is standing at the transom door waiting.

And he is better company on the boat than a lot of people
