Does the TSA make us safe?

SusanandLance, let me ask you a question....Do you feel safer having the TSA screeners there to check you and your baggage?

It's somewhat confusing the way it's worded, and in that case it may have been left up to the discretion of the agent. More than likely it was confiscated because it was over 3.4 oz and not a prescription. Cough syrup like Vicks 44 may not be considered 'medically necessary' and may not be allowed. If it's 3.4 oz or less, no issues. If it's a prescription, it can exceed 3.4 oz.

You need to screen for guns, explosives and knives and the rest is just feel good crap. A well trained individual could take over any aircraft just with knowledge and their bare hands. I'm sure the IDF would consider it child's play and could handle any threat without using guns or knives. The US just needs to get some backbone and quit treating it's citizen's like the enemy. BTW.....I don't need to fly and I don't need their service. Let each airline do their own security work and if you don't like it, don't fly with them. We've already given up to many freedoms for a false sense of security from the Fed.....the people who can't run...or should I say ruined the Postal Service, Mike.

A Cough syrup like Vicks 44 may not be considered 'medically necessary' and may not be allowed. How stupid is all of that.....Vicks 44? It must be a new explosive, Mike.

I guess the problem is that due to bomb making advancements, you can make substantial weapons with a small amount of liquid components.

I agree it can be a pain in the ass, but like I said earlier, I travel often and I don't ever check a bag. I know the rules and I only pack what I need and what fits within the guidelines. I'm never hassled.

I suspect it's a case of an TSA agent not understanding the rules he's trying to apply. It's actually pretty clear
Medications
You may bring all prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including petroleum jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes.

You are not limited in the amount or volume of these items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. BUT if the medically necessary items exceed 3 ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, you MUST declare to one of our Security Officers at the checkpoint for further inspection.

They were antibiotics for an ear infection. She had a perferated eardrum and had been taking them for 3 days. They took them and said I couldn't have them back. That was in November 2006 and my daughter was 5 at the time. D*CK
The only reason why your daughter's meds were confiscated were because they were OTC (over the counter) liquid meds. If it was a prescription, it needs to have a label on it, and in that case, it won't be confiscated regardless of the number of ounces. If you want to be picky, the allowable limit is actually 3.4 oz or 100 ml. And if the meds were that important, get out of line and go check it with your other luggage. Not trying to sound like a d*ck, but most people don't know the rules. I fly often. I know the rules. I don't get hassled.

I've flown over seas many times and have never been "handled in any airport". I will give you 2 stories about security.

1. In France one of my Korean colleagues asked the airport security, you know the one the carry uzzies, if he could leave his luggage at the luggage pickup while he went to the check in counter. This was only 10ft away. The agent told him he would be dead in 5ft. Needless to say he carried his bag to the counter.

2. While checking in at Seoul, a customer I was traveling with had his insulin in a cool pack. In the bottom of the bad was a freezer soft bag. You know the gushy type even when frozen. an agent called his supervisor over to look at it when my customer rips it out of his hand and yells "It's a cool pack freezer bad". Everyone in line and the agents froze. He realized what he did and gently reached it back to the agent and apologized. Good thing they like Americans in Korea or we would still be in jail if not dead.

Point is they did their job without man handling the travelers. You tend to police yourself when you understand how serious other countries are.

As far as profiling goes you would be surprised how fast I get through customs when I’m wearing my corporate shirt. In Geneva the agent said “I see you work for ………. Have a good trip.” My customer was cross examined by the same agent to until he said he was with me. The agent stamped his passport and let him through.

I’ve seen agents take 150 USD bottles of Scotch at Arlanda, Sweden because they were illegal in the US to have on the plane. Yet you could buy it at the duty free stores inside the check points and take it on with no issue. What’s up with that?

Like I said, there are definately some sorry TSA agents out there(sorry about your experience). And as far as my trailer trash comment, it does hold water. Do you have any idea what most of my gate calls are as a technican?? They are for dirty, soiled, seat cushions. Bet that surprized you..........
Wow! I wasn't going to comment here until I read this! It wasn't that long ago you were mocking me about getting "greasy" working on million dollar buses! Hmmmm....

I had a double wide once. One side a 1976 and the other side a 1980. Bolted them together where the doors lined up. Heck of a time matching the roof line. One had a flat front window over the hitch and the other a bay window. :smt043:smt043

I have lived in my share of trailers when I was younger and when we first got married. Sometimes I miss those days! Way less stress...lol

What I was trying to say, DONNIE.............. Was in the early days of flying commercial (when I was young and you were in diapers) people dressed up nice to fly, heck most people looked as they were going to church. now people are so damn nasty getting on the plane that they ruin the damn seat covers immediately upon sitting down. Down right NASTY if you ask me. You just don't have any idea Donnie, but trust me, I do!!

I fly more than most business men, I fly for free, (don't hate), and very seldom have ANY problem. But, i know the rules and play by them. And go through security several times a day. Some of the SH#@ people think they can bring on an aircraft, UNBELIEVEABLE!!! I mean really, people have forgotten 9/11 already??? I haven't, I was laid off for months after the attack(with thousands of others), I'll gladly deal w/the inconvenience than to deal w/the alternative.

mocking me about getting "greasy" working on million dollar buses! Hmmmm....[/QUOTE] A million dollar bus? I work on 250 million dollar Aircraft (Engine Run and Taxi them also), so can i pat myself on the back like you do everyday on CSR?? Your a BLOW@#@*.............. get back to work on that greasy-ass bus!!:smt043

Wow! Hit a nerve?? Again, one can only go off your posts! I wouldn't take my highly trained technicians and send them to clean soiled seats! You ever see any big fancy trucks transporting those engines with Southern Pride Trucking on the door!

Btw... No need to be a prick all the time.... Just sayin
