Does NoFlex really work?

A general question to the group, do the pan tabs kill the bacteria we are trying to fertilize with the noflex?

The condensation treated by the pan tabs in the AC pans flows in to the shower sumps where it is mixed with the water from the shower drains. I get the Noflex in to the sumps by pouring a little bit down the shower drains.
I don’t know if there is a need to fertilize the water that accumulates in the shower sump, but I do know that it keeps the sumps clean.
I know that using the Noflex to interact with the bacteria in the waste tank and head systems is critical, but the only other thing that I use in the waste tank is Tank Terria which is supposed to supercharge the Noflex I’m the waste tank.

I would think that since the tabs kill of most growth, they would kill the good bacteria No Flex helps to grow. The label also advises not to use other chemicals with No Flex. My best guess is this is counter productive.

However you bring up a good point about the AC pans and lines. I think an occasional sprinkle in the pan would help solve the issue. Water activates No Flex, so it would clean the pan and lines to the sump. Certainly worth a try.

That is where I was going, I think I will put Noflex in my pans.

On my 270 we had a bunch of water near the air conditioner, it turned out to be biological growth that had pluged the hose all the way to the sump. I think no flex will handle that well.

Very interesting thread. Ill be paying close attention to everyone results.

Great thread! So I am waiting for arrival of my new boat. I'll assume that from the factory, the tank will be completely empty and dry, and that the assembly guys didn't drop something in there.

So, for a brand new setup, do I just start with NoFlex and nothing else? Just add the NoFlex, put some water in there, and that's it? Then, going forward, how often do you add more NoFlex to the tank? As it's used add more, or just put some in after each pump out? My tank will hold 10 gallons.

They say 1 scoop (equal to 1/2TB i think) per person per day on the boat... so for me and my wife we use 4 scoops for 2 days...

Okay, so each time we're going out, in prep for someone potentially using it, I should put a scoop or two, and flush a little water down the drain. Right? Sounds easy.

I don’t do noflex daily.... maybe once in three days if I remember..... for sure I use it before I leave for a few days

Thanks, everyone! I'm gonna try it. It sure sounds better than the blue goo.

There is a product sold by the same people called TankTeria. It adds the required bacteria that NoFlex helps keep alive. Probably be a good idea for a new tank.

I finally found it mentioned as a second out of ten best in one of the many “Best holding tank chemical” review sites but as mentioned it’s usually conspicuously absent.

I’m still not sold after this season’s use though.

Sadly, those reviews are not to be trusted. They generally go to advertisers or to the companies that sell the product and are advertisers etc.

Be certain you do not have one of the conditions in the first post that will negate the product.

Why is that ?

It’s just not working. I see no improvement in the odor issue despite following the routine to the letter.

I don’t have an in-line vent filter but according to this mystical potion that shouldn’t matter.

As I’ve said I’ll give it the season and unless I see a real difference I’ll move on.

Agreed. Just pointing out that it finally appeared.

I want to say that noflex has made a diff on the holding tank but I’m not 100 %. I ended up rebuilding one of my bellows this season so not sure if that helped with the odor on the boat. I added noflex to the holding tank over the winter as well so maybe That helped as well. Have also changed maintenance of the holding tank by pumping out and rinsing more frequently. I slacked off on using noflex for a few weeks and noticed the odor creeping back. So maybe it does work and very well as we have zero odor walking into the boat after its been closed up for an extended period. I can however say that it absolutely works great to maintain the sump box. After cleaning it well and using noflex it stays clean. Slacked off on that too and it started to get that nasty build up. Added noflex and 2 days later it’s as clean as when I scrubbed it. That being said I can only imagine the reaction in the holding tank. So I’m 50/50 but will continue to use as I think it does help.

I believe the noflex instructions say not to rinse, says that removes the beneficial bacteria.

Great question, I've never noticed growth in my AC pans at all. The climate is quite arid in Nor-Cal compared to the East coast so I only run the AC when we are on the boat. I would think that pan tabs would tend to adversely affect the 'bugs" but the proof is in the pudding according to JVM25.
I'm on my second week using the NoFlex, too early to tell but when I flush the head I don't notice any odor in the cockpit.
