I need to buy a new dock box and wondered who makes the best. Taylor or Best? Anyone have opinions and preferences? Anything I should consider before plunking down a bunch of green?

I have the Taylor Made from West Marine. Waited until they had there bi annual sale and saved almost $200. Very Happy with it.

Just an idea but these are HUGE and run about $120 at Sears. A couple of us picked these up in the spring of 2006 and they're all still holding up very well, albeit a bit faded. The construction is not nearly as sturdy as those available at marine stores so I wouldn't store anything that you need security for, but even if it takes a dump this season, I'd get another.

I also am in the market to buy a new dock box. I have searched all over the internet for decent deals and so far have found nothing cheap. The best price I found was $500 from West Marine for the size I want. I did however find a white plastic molded box for around $100 but it was 2/3 the size of what I wanted. I also do not have a West Marine in my area so the shipping for the box was around $100. I am going to order one to a store about 100 miles away and go pick one up. So any help here is appreciated to find a cheaper box.

That has been my problem They are crazy expensive now days.

I just got one last month on Ebay from Cargo Largo. It had one crack in the fiberglass by the latch. I got the dock box for $115.00 plus shipping. Ended up paying less than half of list for the box. I spent a few bucks on materials and fixed the crack myself, works great now. I have seen them on ebay from time to time.

I have used a "Suncast" unit (99 gallon) for 4 years and everyone on my dock went out and bought the same one. It is not like the cheap things Home Depot sells. It is much easier on the wallet than the real fiberglass units and it has the ability to use a pad lock on the one we have.

I was looking 2 years ago....I never found a what I considered a great deal....except one that I found at the Bass Pro Outlet store...but it was only 4' long...and I wanted a 6' box.

I ended up buying mine from our marina...it is the Dockboxes brand...I think model 625. It has the shocks that hold the lid up....it is very nice. I paid around $500.00

Kurt...call the State Park office...they are dealer(as well as our Marina) for dockboxes unlimited. I bought mine 2 years ago (about $500). I think they basically sell them at cost. I called them and they came down and set it up next to my slip...so I didn't have to mess with transporting one. Let me know if you have any questions.

I have the white gel coat finished one from West Marine. I paid a lot for it back in 1999, but I figured what the hell, I just bought a new Sea Ray....besides, I told my wife to bury me in it.

Walk down the dock until you see a boat for sale that has a dock box you like. Call the phone number on the For Sale sign. Tell him you'll give him $250 for the dock box, since he's not going to need it any more. He can sell it to you and put the money towards next month's slip rent or his next payment. If he opens the box and you like what you see, offer him $500 for the box and the contents.

Don't forget to check Craigslist! I'm not sure if lots of people use it in your area but in Maryland it is invaluable. I find tons of stuff on it and have seen numerous dock boxes for sale over the years. Even if you dont see one, you could post a wanted ad.

Thanks everyone. I tried Craigslist and purchased a new box the exact size I wanted at a crazy low price. The guy bought it last year and decied to sell his boat this year. A great suggestion. Thanks

I searched Craig's List for a while and came up empty. We're moving to a new marina this summer and this place doesn't supply dock boxes (like our old one did). Trick is they require that all dock boxes be white. I bought two cans of resin furniture spray primer and a can of white resin furniture paint. One coat of primer, two coats of paint applied with a foam roller and the old Suncast looks brand new and complies with the marina's regulation.

Thanks for the ideas Ron and Mark, I'll be buying one of those things pretty soon. I've been wanting one, but not willing to pay the bucks for the one west marine sells.
