Veteran and retired NYPD here.
Needless to say, I’ve already blocked the channels carrying today’s games on the TV’s in my house so none of the out-laws (who are largely anti cop, anti veteran and anti me anyway) can tune the channel to any games in their usual effort to provoke or start an argument with me.
Dealing with my wife’s sister’s husband who I met 25 years ago who is such an obnoxious SOB that I have yet to meet a single friend of his, and his 3 adult daughters, 2 of which are chips off the old block.
Unfortunately for my wife her sister passed away this year. I feel bad for my wife losing her only sibling, but I wasn’t on the sister’s very short list of people she got along with either.
My wife wasn’t sure if her sister was going to show up at our wedding 23 years ago. She did show (probably because she wanted to put on a show for other family and friends), but then boycotted us completely for the next 6 months.
Sheesh! My wife wonders why I hate the holidays!
Well......glad I got a chance to vent before the freak show shows up at the door................

HavannaShamrock, from one retired cop to another, and a 7.5 year USAF veteran, thank you for that post.

JVM, your post and your family sound pretty typical. I can remember as a young kid all the aunts and uncles getting together at someone's house at Christmas and Thanksgiving Day. The uncles would park in front of the TV watching football, getting drunk, saying words I was supposedly too young to hear, and fighting with each other.

Ahhhh, yes. Childhood memories. Ain't they grand!

Fortunately, we have GW's 102 year old mother her, son and DIL and two grandsons over at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It's a great time.

Yeah, life was better before I retired from the job.
Wife: Are you going to be able to get off for .............. this year.
Me: No but I got the next best thing. I’ve got to go in for a 4x12 so at least I’ll be home all morning with you and the kids.

Went to mothers house today. I am a former state constable, grandfather was a police officer years ago. Step-son is a detective in a pretty big local department, other step-son went through the process this year for the state police and is on the list for next year (keep fingers crossed). Brother-in-law is a police officer and his brother is a retired state trooper. Quite a LE presence in our family.

Anyway, just mother, step-father, mother in law, 3 of our 4 kids and their significant others today so it was a great day. Oldest step-son (detective) was running a 5k race today so wasn't there. And no football at all today. In fact we never even watched TV today. Sat around socializing all day. Didn't miss it at all.

Sounds like Canada and US are very similar at Thanksgiving but we hold ours when the snow has not arrived. All my Thanksgivings were at the my uncles cottage until I finished college, heat was wood stove and there was an outhouse. Adults drank and played cards. They had a good time and we children played outside or sat by the stove. All the men had been WWII veterans. One thing I remember after they had lots to drink was a comment by my mother regarding a person they knew "He was killed in the battle of England" He was fighter pilot. Long ago but; we need to remember that not supporting ones county is bad.

The night game was an abysmal display of all the worst the sport has to offer. It should have been banned nationwide. That may have played a factor in the poor ratings.

I agree. I was hoping the Tryptophan would have helped lull me to sleep on Thanksgiving before that game but unfortunately it didn't work. Needed Jameson's and lots of it....

Son is leaving for the Steeler game in a few minutes. Gonna be a cold one tonight. I don't think the Steelers have seen as much of a drop in attendance as other teams have. Step-son was at the Thursday night game last week and said it looked pretty full.

Thanksgiving viewing down 10% per Deadline reports, particularly the night game.

NBC reports more details of Thanksgiving ratings.

The Lions/Vikings game was down 12.3 percent from last year and 7.3 less than 2015.

The Cowboys/Chargers game was down 20.5 percent and 19 percent down from 2015.

The night game was down 10.2 percent and a whopping 33.6 from 2015.

These numbers are astounding.
