Mike, it would be REAL difficult for me to raise my give-a-sh!t factor from down in the basement where it now resides. And for me, that's a 180* turnaround from my old die hard Seahawks fan days.

Pretty tough to get a rousing debate when we're all on the same side. Well, except for a few who still love the game. Butt hurt snowflakes gotta have something to do with their time.

Ok, all you Seahawks fans that used to tell me Marshawn Lynch was just misunderstood, what do you think now that he sits for the US anthem but stood for another country's?

Many stadiums were again showing empty seats in the TV coverage yesterday.

They're well on their way. That is how they work. They infect the host and before you know it the disease spreads leaving behind a husk of its former self.....but enough about California....

The experience in Charlotte is very different than described. The Panthers have sold out every game for the past 18 years. Panther gear is proudly worn around town every Sunday. My kids have grown up as Panther fans and my seven year old can recite the starting lineup. He idolizes Luke Kuechly and wears his jersey to school every Monday. Our weekends during the season are planned around the games - we are at the stadium for home games or watching on TV at home or sometimes local sports bars for away games. We traveled to the Super Bowl in San Francisco in 2016. The support the Panthers have in Charlotte is amazing and it's growing not shrinking. It's a shame some of you have become disillusioned with the game but there are plenty of people that are still fans.

It does seem as what you experience locally is different than many other cities. There seem to be about 10 teams not experiencing the downturn, they are usually the winning teams combined with better handling of the off field issues. Does your son play? As parents watch their kids heroes like LK have multiple concussion issues the well of future talent is beginning to dry up.

    Hi Jim,
I wouldn't say that I've become disillusioned with the game. It more like disappointed followed by indifference. The game has changed so much over the years from when I started viewing in the late '70's. Is it a catch or isn't it? Did he break the plane or not? Was that offensive or defensive pass interference? One only need listen to the "Rules Expert" in the studio to see how ridiculous it's become. He will swear they are gonna call it a catch only to have it be an incompletion after an 8 minute review! Lol
Adding the political drama on top of it was really just another unappetizing change to the game for me. My allegiance to the game was already waning before this drama came along & it was just another in a long line of changes that I find disappointing and therefore make me less inclined to watch.
I'm glad for you and your family that you still find the game so much fun & get to enjoy that experience together. If that's how you guys feel, you should continue to enjoy it & never feel you have to justify or apologize for it! I miss the days when I was as passionate as you! I'll add this one last thought for you, Go Panthers!! Lol (That's coming from a Giants fan)

Have read a lot of articles about downturn in interest by sports fans.

I think the recent protests have been a focal point - and are reason enough for me to lose interest.

Could be other factors are driving the lack of interest. Newer generations are losing interest in NFL. Remember boxing - newer generations just didn't have the same interest.

One of the things that have propped up NFL interest in recent years has been the pervasiveness of Fantasy Football. People are more focused on how their collection of players are performing - not specific teams.

    Jim,

I am not disillusioned with the game itself. I will admit that I have turned on a game for a few minutes now and then. I am recovering from a major surgery and you can only watch so many episodes of Pawn Stars before you go nuts... LOL.

Seriously though - I have noticed the addition of medical tents and the implementation of the concussion protocol - all which I think are good things and great improvements for safety in the game.

I am not against the reason they have been taking a knee. I simply think that protesting while they are on the clock AND WORKING is wrong. If I was to "take a knee" at work I would either be reprimanded or terminated. I would be told to protest on my own time. The same standards should apply while they are working but the owners have decided not to enforce it for some reason.

With all of their money, the protesters should be able to pool together a fund and start a non profit foundation to bring their issues to the public eye. I am sure they could get people like Oprah to donate to help their cause. I think that would more effective than taking a knee which masks the real reason they are protesting with outrage over disrespect for the flag, the country and our military personal and veterans.

for me it is real simple.....I am not disillusioned by the game....I enjoy the game....or used to...

I am simply offended by the public disrespect the players are showing to my flag and my national anthem and my country.....

when I am offended by something or someone I remove myself from it/them...

I love the game and miss watching it a lot, but I’ve got to look at myself in the mirror.
For those that continue to watch: Choice! That’s one of the things that makes this country great.

I wonder how many college football coaches and schools would say it is OK if their players started 'taking a knee' during the anthem.....

My son didn't play Pop Warner this year because I missed the sign up for him. Dumb on my part but the web site was confusing and ALL of the slots filled the first weekend. He has spent the time with lacrosse and karate. He can't wait to play football next year. He has been very inspired by videos of Christian McCaffery playing ball like a demon at 7yrs old. Another fine example of Panther football! Thomas Davis- Greg Olsen- Luke Kuechly-Charles Johnson-Julius Peppers-Jonathan Stewart-Ryan Kalil- Kurt Coleman......These guys anchor our team. All are part of the community and give back. First class guys.

    No Panthers kneeled.

My son stands at attention with his hand over his heart for the anthem at every game. We make sure we are in our seats and we hope for a fly over. Nothing better than some F-16s screaming over top to get the day started!

Here’s my opinion: I don’t understand how adults love watching other adults “play” a game that kids “play”
I guess coming to the USA from N.Irleand I never got into US sports but I am a huge flag waver and have nothing but respect for this country and it’s protectors. My son is in the Air Force and I am a retired cop so I have absolutely no use for these men playing a boys game.
