Do I upgrade from a 2002 410DA to to a 2004 420DA?

Got the 410 this year, and I really think I would like a bit more performance as well as a hard top. So I have stumbled across a 2004 420, and while I really would like to get to a 460 or 480, this 420 is priced pretty well, and equipped like I like.

SO here are the stats

2002 410 with 3126 Cats 350hp 600 hours Fully equipped, and in very good condition.

Vs

2004 420 with 417hp Cummins with 240 hours, hard top, comparable equipment, in very good condition.

Any thoughts?

Also, does anyone have the 420, is there a separate fridge and freezer under the counter?

How does it perform with the Cummins engines?

While I like both the 410 and the 420, I don't think this trade makes financial sense. You are going to take wholesale to move your 410, you'll pay retail for the 420 and you really want a bigger boat anyway.

Your 410 is plenty fast, (a kt or 2 slower than the heavier 420 w/hardtop) it is one of the most efficient mid-sized cruisers there is, it is a known entity, i.e. you know what it needs and what it doesn't. Financially, the better move is to wait until the right 460 or 48 comes along then react.

Are you speaking of the 2004 420 in new buffalo? If so I know the boat very well.

The 420DA with Blue Diamond motors and a hardtop will cost you more $$$$ and will run a few knots faster and burn more fuel (~15-20%) and is virtually the same size....acutally 6" shorter overall lenght

A 460DA with a hardtop will cost you more $$$ and perform the same as your 410DA ....but it is bigger.

I'd wait for the 480DA with higer HP QSC 540HP motors..!!!!!!! It's more $$$$, bigger, and faster

Carter....QSCs in the 480DA......QSMs in the 480DB...

BUT...a pair of QSMs in the 480DA sure would be nice!!!!!

Carter,

You can get him back by pointing out there is no "480DA"... it's a 48DA

I am not speaking of the 420 in New Buffalo, actually it is a repo 420 in Kentucky, so I gotta probably budget for transportation. I have a broker who says he "Has a guy" on my 410, and I would probably be looking at a roughly 30k upgrade cost.

Yeah a 48 would be the sweet option, but that is probably a couple of years out anyway. I just contemplated the switch because I don't really want to spend 150k to upgrade to a 48, but I really want a hardtop.

I sold a 97 400 sundancer to upgrade to a 06 44 with a hard top. I disliked that boat more than any of the previous 25 boats I have owned. Before you buy, strech out on the bed. It is so much smaller it is terrible to sleep on. Run this boat for a decent lenght of time at the cruise speed you want to run. The reflected noise from the hard top is painfull. I have regretted selling the very fuel- efficient 400 since the day it was sold. I sold the 44 this year and it was the happiest day of my boating life.

Our 420 da with the cummins 450 diamond, 420 HP at the prop cruises at 2250 RPM, 23 - 23.5 knots, burns 28 GPH. Top end is about 28.5 knots.

Our buddy has the 410 da and there is a very small differance in size.

I dont have any "noise" issues with the hardtop, it seems normal.

I was rafted with a 2005 48da....my boat was 1' longer than his (his boat was very nice with the hardtop, tnt, and loaded). It got interesting when he asked me my fuel burn, then said "that's EACH engine, right?" I said no.....both engines. His real life fully-loaded cruising gph was real high. Just saying. His jaw dropped a few inches

At first glance the upgrade didn’t seem to make sense until you mentioned that your cost for the swap was 30K and this puts you in a boat 2 years newer, with fewer hours and perhaps better equipped. The hardtop option alone was initially worth more than your anticipated upgrade payout. But, I don’t know what your final number is on the 420, so it is hard to evaluate this deal only knowing that it costs 30K more that what you paid for your 410.

I know both boats very well and ran with a 410 for a few years and considered both when we were looking 4 years ago. The LOA comparison is a little misleading, as the 410 is listed at 45’-6” including the attached swim platform, while the 420 is listed at 45’ with the integral hull swim platform. Which means the 420 actually has the longer hull length and slightly wider beam.

Yes, the 420 does have a separate fridge and freezer under the counter.

What to do? I think I am in agreement with some of the others here and would wait out this market for an attractive deal on perhaps a 460. There are some great deals now on this model that would not be anywhere near the cost of jumping to a 48DA. There is a huge difference between the 410 and 460, which would make the jump seem like a real sizeable upgrade.
