Traditionally Europeans treated driving as a serious endeavor given high respect. I once read an anecdote in a car mag describing the appalled reaction of Daimler engineers, upon their purchase of Chrysler, to the number of cup holders the American buyer wants.
They did not eat or drink coffee while driving, it was too important for that.
I remember a great cartoon that summed up American drivers so well. In a family van woman steering with knee, leaning between the seat to the back seat to feed baby, while holding a coffee cup in the other hand. The caption read, "thanks honey, I just love the hands free phone"
And there you have it...
