Disc Brakes

Anyone have them on their trailer? Better than drums? Pro's Con's??

I just picked up an old galvanized dual axle and it needs a new brake system. I was thinking of upgrading them to disc. The kits with all the parts and coupler are pretty reasonable.

I have disc's on one axle of my trailer. The trailer is a 2005. So far I am happy with them. They don't seem to stop quite as well as my drums brakes did with my old boat, but this boat is about 3,000 lbs heaver so it is hard to compare. :thumbsup:

I have disk brakes on both axles under our 240da. It stops so easily with the surge brakes that you almost forget its there. Mine has a reverse lockout solenoid on it so when you put the vehicle in reverse it will freewheel. The truck needs to be wired for it also with a 5flat on the trailer.

yes I have them .... easy to hose off after launching ... no drum brake flushing port...... easier to replace brake pads, no adjustments necessary....... and they just stop better. CONS... I do not believe I have any at this point.

I upgraded the single axle drum to double axle discs on my old trailer. They work almost too well, and it seems that they are doing more of the work than the truck is sometimes.

The only drawback I have found is that you have to pull forward slightly once again after stopping to disengage the coupler before engaging reverse and the lockout solenoid, or you will unsuccessfully attempt to back up with the trailer brakes engaged.

We just had the old 8 lug hubs replaced with stainless discs. Also got electric over hydraulic actuator. Cost about $2200 altogether. Stops great, even when the pads are wet. Also effective in reverse. The only down side I had to down-grade my existing in-cab controller as the Prodigy was too high-tech.
