Dinghy storage on swim platform

Greeting all

I have a Searay 370 with an extended swim platform - using our inflatable was always such a hassle. Not davits yet, tried towing with the engine attached - too slow and a PITA. Have many times taken off the engine (Merc 9.9) and stowed it under a seat - another PITA. Yesterday my son and I tied the inflatable, engine and all, up on the swim platform - had some overhang on the back - the inflatable is 10'2" so the width was not a problem. Actually this process was a helluva lot easier than taking off the engine, etc etc.

I've been strapping my dinghy on the platform without davits for the past few weekends like you just did. My platform is really low to the water and if I'm not careful I will swamp the dinghy when coming off plane. Also at fast idle the dinghy dances all over the platform from the wave action. I'm going to make my own version of "Dom's dinghy davits" with a few modifications over the winter.

Hi,,
i'm going to seize the opportunity

i have a 44 Sundancer, Somebody knows what's could be the size for dinghy?

and where can i buy a extended swim platform

Thanks

It's going to be tough hauling it up onto a high platform. factor in the weight of the dingy and outboard, lifting it say 10"? You're either going to rip the hell out of the bottom of the dinghy, rip the hell out of your swim platform, or both. In the pic above, I have a 6'5" dink with a 2.5hp outboard. I've already cracked two wooden slats in the dinghy floor lifting it just 3" onto my platform.

Mike... does your 2.5HP fit in the transom locker?

Nope, it's too big. I leave it mounted to the dinghy. You "might"? be able to shoe horn a 2.5hp 2 stroke in there. Actually now that I think about it, i've never tried to stick mine in there, i'm just assuming it's too big. At least I think it is. not sure. You'll want to buy some spectrum gel coat repair if you're going to be doing that on a regular basis though.

Mike,

I can get the Suzuski 2.5hp 4S in the transom locker. It sits crossways and somewhat upright. Not too much of a big deal getting in and out since it weighs 30#. I just wrap the cowling up with an old beach towel so it does get too scratched up.

I've heard that 4stroke engines have to be kept in vertical position to prevent oil getting to some area and posible do damage to the engine. Is this true?

Yes, and i believe different engines will have different ways of lying them down. ex. tiller up/down

Mawyatt - are you talking about your 380 or 260?

Not true for my honda... It is designed to lay on its side... I have a 2 HP 4 stoke...

Mine has a big sticker "Lay this side down".

I took a look at my 2.5hp mercury dinghy today, no way is that fitting in my transom locker.
