Dinghy Davit

I love the look of those Dandy Dom Davits, but I just ordered the Hurley davits based upon a number of good number recommendations. What I had been doing was just hauling the RIB onto the platform (with engine on) and tying it down. That's been getting harder every year (I can't imagine why). So the Hurley's will have to be an imprivement!

I'm not handy enough for a DIY although I love that the Dom system uses lower profile attachments than the toe-stubbers that come with the Hurley (I ordered the protective covers... we'll see... I have a Plan B for that if it doesn't work).

Lastly, Asureyez you are sooooooo right in that a hydraulic platform is the way to go. My buddy has one for his center console "mini-yacht" at it is so easy to use it's embarrassing!

First Test run of Dom's Dinghy Davit went well...no motor yet ...one step at a time...

Next test....put the motor on the transom of the dink....

As an aside, you 410 owners may also notice the extra cupholders on the transom.....I added 7 of those stainless cupholders throughout the cockpit area ..... I'll "Share that experience" on a different post....

Oh...and one more thing....I REALLY like the color of the water that Asureyez is in better than the water color of the Barnegat Bay....

I absolutely LOVE Dom's Dinghy Davits!!!!!!!!
What a great inovative idea that addresses some of the real problems.

Since this thread has come back up, I just thought I would report back on how Dom's Dinghy Davits have held up.

I've used them for most of last season, June through October, and when they didn't come with me, I just left them on the dock at home baking in the sun. I mostly store my dinghy on land, so the Davits probably spend more than 80% of the time exposed to sunlight.

Because they are individual, and not "tied" together, they easily fit in the trunk or under the rear seat. When I am out on the hook, either for the afternoon or overnight, they're easily removed and stored so that they are out of the way. The very low profile of the Weaver receiver almost eliminates the toe stub issue. I say "almost" only becuase it is still there, but it's only about an 1/8" high.

Also, they don't get in the way at all when using the boarding ladder.

The davits themselves have spent their entire life so far (born June of '07) outside in the elements: Sun, Salt, Heat, Snow, Cold, etc.. They were outside on the side of the house all winter. I just looked at them yesterday and there is no warp or discoloration. There is some minor "browning/rust" spots on the SS, but no more than what you see on your Rails and I'm sure it will brush/wax right off.

So...... Dom's Dinghy Davits have so far passed the test of time.....

 Nice job Dom, Did you ever test it with the engine on?

Hi I love the Dom Davit. Would it be possible to get the drawings on how to make them?

Thanks, Mike

Sorry Mike, I don't remember if I ever got back to you.....CRS (not CSR). I still have the drawings at home. I'll try to remember to scan them in (CRS again). PM me your email address I'd be happy to send them to you. You will have to purchase a set of Weaver receivers.....try ebay.

Sure...many times. I made the trip from NJ to BIH last year, ~500 miles round trip, with the dink and motor on the mounts. Hit some Nasty seas in the Delaware and the mounts held up perfectly!!!! Thanks for the compliment.

I showed this to a friend last year, he fabricated something similar for his boat. It works great. Now there are about a half dozen boats in our marina with a Dom Davit type system, not exactly the same in each case, but modified as needed to fit the boat it was made for. If you have the means to make one, go for it. The price can't be beat.

That's pretty cool! Do they all call them Dom's Dinghy Davit?.... I'm glad it worked out for them....

Each person came up with their own name for the davit, since they are all homeade.
A couple I recall are, "Dink Launcher","Dinghy Thingy" .

Hello,

I also made my "own" Dinghy Davit.
I used the idea from Dom, aldo I used a plastic support system.
The thickness of the plastic is 1 inch, and it's unbreakable and can resist heat and cold.
The rvs 316 receivers are also almost the same concept.
Here are some pics, after the weekend I post pics if they are mounted on the boat.
Cost $100,- total :smt001

Thanks Dom:smt038

I just came back this past week from a trip to Bimini where I used my Nautley Davits with my 9'6" inflatable dinghy and 6hp Merc, and I have to say it was a breeze getting the dinghy on and off the boat. The ones I bought, which I found on Ebay, have the rollers on them and also have pins where you can remove the davit arms and stow them when you don't need them, giving you back your swim platform and keeping the davits out of the way.
Here's a photo at the fuel docks...

How far off the water is your swim platform and how deep is your swim platform? Thanks!

Hey barryg, I just purchased the Nautley roller davits too. Any issues with mounting or words of wisdom you can share? I will be mounting them in a few days. They are sure pretty to look at and the quality is there.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,

I made a few phone calls to Craig at nautley before I installed to make sure I did it right. You need to double check the spacing in between the brackets which are dependent on the length of your dinghy. What kind and size did you buy? Mine is a 9'6" inflatable. I mounted them to make sure the holes wouldn't be on one of the support stringers under the platform; and also so they didn't interfere with the swim ladder. The difficult part was reaching under the swim platform with the wrench as I did the install with my boat in the water. But once I figured out how to stretch out and reach under it was pretty easy. I measured the distance between to make sure that was correct, made sure they were parallel and to the end of the platform, lined up the brackets and marked the holes, drilled pilot holes thru the bracket holes, then applied 3M 5200 on the underside of the brackets and screwed in the screws with the drill, tightened the nuts and that was it. I waited a few days for the 5200 to cure before testing and putting any weight on the davits by bringing on the dinghy. I can raise and lower the dinghy with the motor on no problem. I have a 6hp that weighs 55lbs, and the inflatable with the air floor weighs about 80 lbs.

If you have any questions, call Craig @ Natuley 586-242-0919. He is a good resource and can walk you thru any questions.

Good luck, and post some photos when you finish the install.

Barry

Thanks Barry........

My RIB is 9'8" and with the 6hp Evinrude weighs about 200lbs. I too will be doing the install in the water. The instructions look straight forward but I always appreciate input from "real world" experience.

I ordered mine directly from Nautley so they matched the model to my application and I ended up with the DinghyRamp XLR500. Craig was very helpful.

This one..............

Barry......did you end up with room between the transom and your dinghy? I would like to install my davits to leave about 8"-10" or more of space to get by and connect the tie-down straps. Of course this puts the toe stubbers out farther on the platform when the davits are removed.

Thanks again,
Brian

I don't have the XL like you do, but I still have room to open the transom locker and walk by the back. Definitely make sure you tie yours down well..That will be the most important thing. The install should be easy, though anytime you drill into your boat anywhere you're always on edge!

Good luck and let me know how it goes. Measure twice, drill once and have fun!

Barry
