Just Surveyed a 2005 340 with different size props. One was 18x22 and the other 18x21.5 is this common?

Very common. that is the way they come from the factory on several SR models.

Sometimes it's because of slightly different gearing in the transmissions. Basically to get the most efficiency out of the power package in the boat.

Good to konw, but I wonder why they would do that?
This is the explanation to your question from a searay review

EXTRA POINT: To prevent crabbing and counteract the effect of counter-rotating transmissions, Sea Ray installs props with slightly different pitches (20" and 20.5").

Hi,
I had the same findings when I last hauled out when I saw the different sizes I though soemthing was a bit suss.
I discovered by accident the reason why when I was going through the mountain of paperwork that comes with the boat. The two propellers have test certificates showing the exact measurements of each prop - as it turns out my 18x21 & 18x21.5 stamped props have nearly exactly the same dimensions (values compared on the test certificates) - so they are a matched pair.
