It seems to me that a seperate Diesel engine section would make
it faster and easier for the CSR useres. JC

A Diesel Board

I agree with JC on this one, one section for engines and tranny is really mixing needs. The Merc owners have different issues than the Mercs with I/O vs. V-Drives, and the diesel owners have a totally different world in gear, maintenance and service problems.

I don';t think we need different sections by engine brand, but sections for OB, IB/OB & IB for gas in one section and a separate diesel section would make using the board simpler and less time consuming.

IMHO

I agree on this one.

The forum is accross the board very helpful and often entertaining, but with recent membership growth, it takes more time to find relevant info.

Good idea JC3!

Great idea,
Boaters with gas engines looking to move up to diesels, that forum would be very helpful.
With the cats, cummings and detroits, it's very confusing trying to find the correct posts.

I thought that others had already taking that into their own hands...I will see if Jim can get that added.

The current engines section goes all the way back to July 24th on the first page, in other words it doesn't see a lot of action. If we seperate it into 6 different forums it will look like a ghost town of inactivity. Where do we draw the line on forums? If you have a question about Cummins, just put Cummins in the searchbox and bam, you have your results. If we segregate into too many forums the main forum page will look confusing and intimidating.

I also think it is good practice for people to ask questions, even if the answer has been posted somewhere back in time. This is what generates lively discussion and activity. Whats more fun, walking into a library where everything is indexed and you have to be quiet, or walking into a group of boaters where you can speak freely and ask as many questions as you want. If there is a useful resource on something then you can be pointed in the right direction. Perhaps we could have a FAQ section for each boat or engine or whatever.

If somebody posts some useful info in the diesel section about a racor, it will be lost to the guy that has an I/O, or V-Drive or whatever because he may not read the diesel section. Should we have a section on Racors too? Maybe a section on large fuel fills, and another on small fuel fills  . Of course this is YOUR place to hang out, so I'm open to suggestions, just wanted to point out my point of view.

Just a thought

We don't need six sections really, just a Gas Section and a Diesel Section would be simple enough to do, not too confusing for even newbies to get.

gas and Diesel ER's are totally different worlds!

How about a separate section for microwaves and coffee makers...Too many layers IMHO......Before too long, we will need a section for colors, outdrive types, antennas, stereos and who knows what else. Again, just my $02.

Again, It was not my intent for differant brand (type) sections, just 2 (two) DIESEL AND GASOLINE. It was just a thought. JC

Jim,

I think JC's idea has a lot of merit.

The reason you can't find much under Engines and Transmissions is because we, as a group, fail to stay on subject once a thread gets started. If you included the engine and transmission posts in Sport Yachts/Yachts, Sport boats, General Discussion, General repair and maintenance, you might be surprised at the activity.

The other problem with a search in one area is that we have allowed too many model specific threads to run on endlessly. We have threads for 420DA's, 240DA's, 220DA's, mid-90's 290DA's, etc. and your cursory look-see didn't include any of those, yet there is a lot of data on gas engines, diesel engines, etc. there that cannot show up on a search of Engines & Transmissions.

I also think that there are sometimes too long threads for the topic subject.
I see threads with 15 pages of posts and reply's, where in some cases the subjects changes a lot off times.
Some are long but very good because it tells a story, or the subject is really followed.

For people that search for a topic it's not very simple too find quick a good post here because there are a lot and the search words give a lot of pages and post.

If I type Cummins I find 3 pages with more than thousand reply's some threads have 225 reply's and with this search word I even find threads with the topic icenglass....... (has this something to do with Cummins??)

I also think that Jim has a point that there has to be some activity.

Maybe Frank got right and we can give it a try....
If it doesn’t work you can bring it too the old situation.

Regards Peter.
