Diesel safety (as compared to gas)

The gas boat danger is way overblown. .....

Is that pun intended?

I wonder what our insurance agents in the group would have to say. Assuming all else being equal with two boats, except one being gas and one being diesel, which would cost more/less to insure? I would think that the insurance companies would probably have compiled tons of statistics.

SBW.. I completley disagree.... We had a boat explode at the marina fuel dock when i was a kid... seeing people flung in the air like rag dolls, people screaming and skin dripping off there bodies is something ill never forget. So u might want to revise ur post!

Exactly my point. How many years ago was that? Do you see it every year?

A poorly maintained boat with an unknown history where the owner did not follow proper procedure proves only that some people are not very careful or smart. It has nothing to do with this being a gas boat.

Ok. A gas boat burned. Why not show the video of the big diesel SR that caught fire and was shown on YouTube over and over again? In my experiences, I've seen more diesels burn and they are not as common as gassers. Just because it happenes does not make gassers unsafe. You have to do your maintenance

This link would not open but it appears to be another ad from a slip and fall lawyer looking for work.

Congrats JFF,

Is diesel better than Gas? Well to my way of thinking yes, in just about any way you can imagine. Diesel will burn, but you'll have to work at it at normal air pressures and temperatures, the vapor pressure of diesel is such that it can't get to explosion concentrations from the surface evaporation even if stored in typical ER's, Gas will explode with little more than a pin hole exposed to the open air. The spark from a cell phone ringing can ignite gasoline vapors.

Diesel smells just about as bad as gas, but you won't get drunk on it. If you ever have to suck siphon diesel it will linger in your mucus tissue for at least a month, gas two weeks.

NOTE to file always siphon diesel before morning coffee followed by a pint of rum.

When fueling at a dock with gassers sin the vicinity, I shut down the genny, other than that nope. If the dock ape wants everything shut down, i make him tell the Admiral of the hour she has to live without AC for 20 minutes. That cures him of that silliness in a hurry!

There are plenty of fuel explosions every year.... diesel don't explode...

Looks like just 125 in 2007. I wonder what percentage of the boats in use that number represents. If this was a common problem you would read about it all the time.

The extremes we will go to help a fellow boater with a simple question......... have you gotten your opinion yet on which is safer. I believe I am getting confused now.

Where is temper explosion from running out of Rum whilest having to listen to Admiral ragging about broken nails and the other women in Bikini's?

Mick,

Despite all this side conversation, I did get my answer, yes. :) I am going to proceed with the notion that if there are no gas boats around I can run the generator while filling, if there are any other boats around (unless I know for a fact they are all diesels) I will turn it off. That seems to be the safest thing to do which is all I'm interested in.

Regards,
Jason

I think the diesel fire was arson.

A poorly maintained diesel boat dont go boom.

"A poorly maintained boat with an unknown history where the owner did not follow proper procedure proves only that some people are not very careful or smart. It has nothing to do with this being a gas boat." Correct... but it goes Boom.
