Hello, I have gas engines now and am considering moving up to a 2006 or newer Sundancer with diesel engines. Does anyone know how noticeable the diesel smoke/smell is when cruising slow in a boat with the Cummins QS 380's? I read that the Zeus technology has the exhaust flow underwater and away from the boat and got the impression that the fumes wouldn't be noticeable. Are the newer diesel engines getting better when it comes to exhaust fumes? (When cruising slow in a friends boat (Sundancer 2002) with diesels the smell was noticeable.) Thanks for any input you diesel owners may have!

I notice the smell once in awhile, idling with the wind at my back. After a week you begin to like the smell. Now I run around the city looking for trucks so I can get my smell fix. Weekends are too far apart.

Very rarely and a following wind is needed.....

And it does grow on you

I luv the smell of diesel...
Almost as much as the 2-stroke exhaust from my old merc outboards...

Yes, the underwater exhaust from pod drives virtually eliminates exhaust fumes, and all of the newer electronically controlled diesels burn much cleaner than their predecessors.

With the newer electronic diesels, like what you are looking at, you will not have "diesel fumes" to smell. My engines are 2003 but are electronic and they don't smoke, leave soot or smell... My previous gas 380 DA, however, did have that gas smell... sorta like being around a prostitute at 3 AM....

If you get diesels... make sure you get a Solaire grill so you can join the club.

I have mechanical Diesels and only have an odor at start up. None while cruising. I had the same concerns and all these guys are right, it grows on you.
