My depth display on Smartcraft started alternately flashing 0.0 and -- this week. At first I thought maybe the transducer was bad or the connection was bad. But as I started looking into it, it appears the Smartcraft also gets water temp from the transducer. The water temp is reading properly. Any suggestions?

Tim...not sure if there is a fix. Mine depth appears to be accurate, but water temp always says 125-130. If the depth quits working I will replace it.

Tim,

Once you start getting those readings regularly on the Smartcraft, it's a sign that the transducer is going. Oftentimes, you'll get the erratic depth readings, including the "--" while simultaneously getting mostly accurate water temp readings, or vice versa. I noticed mine going when I saw varied depths flashing while tied up in my slip, and the water temp reading 179 degrees or so. Once it goes, it's just time to replace it. Luckily, the transducer is a plug and play device.....simply remove the old, replace and plug back in to the engine harness, and you're good as new.

Side Note: When you replace the transducer, be sure to install the new one in the correct orientation, meaning you should line up the arrow on the head of the unit properly to account for the deadrise offset of your hull/transom (assuming you're going with a thru hull install). If you're replacing a transom mount, replacement is even easier.

Thanks guys. I was afraid the transducer was going. Our local MM tech said there may be and inline fuse, but since I am getting the sea temp readings I think I can rule that out. Guess it's time for a new transducer, now to find the supplier. I have a message into Sea Ray customer service.

I think most dealers keep the transducers in stock....Just make sure you get the right one. Yours sounds just like the one I had to replace which was the combo depth/water temp unit.
