i just purchased a humminbird hdr610p depth gauge. i want to try and do the install myself. my main question is does anyone know where to glue the puck down at? i read the instructions and it says to put the puck in water and try different areas to find the best. does anyone thats done this on a boat like mine have a pic or can tell me where to install? thanks

try area right on front of engine.
should be installed lowest possible (I hope you bought with wide angle transducer, not narrow angle)
to find best spot apply silicone to transducer and stick it to bottom inside bilge and check if you have steady readings, if not, try different spot.
when you find right location, clean silicone with acetone, sand area flat with 100-180 grit sand paper, clean area and transducer surface one more time and mount transducer to bottom using epoxy what came with unit,
remember mixing epoxy in spreading motion not stirring to prevent air bubbles being caught inside epoxy (air pockets may prevent good depth reading)

im not sure what transducer i got. it is whatever comes with the humminbird hdr610p. i will look at the area in front of my engine and see if there is room there. it does seem like that would be easier to get to than somewhere behind the engine. thanks guys.

I have the same unit and did the install myself. You should try to get the transducer as far aft and close to the centerline as possible. Here's a nice trick: Put the transducer into a ziplock bag, fill it with water, then seal it up. You can now move the transducer around until you find a spot that works well. With the exception of avoiding a few chines, I'm guessing you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a good location.

boatmailster,
For educational purposes what is the logic behind wide angle vs narrow angle transducer.

thanks

because there is no way to glue transducer inside bilge exactly in middle of boat it will always seat at angle to bottom.
depends on shape of bottom of your boat transducer may "shoot" too much to side and won't receive reflected signal back, or loose reading when you make turn and transducer shooting almost parallel to bottom
wide angle transducer shoot about 15-20 deg. wide compare to about 5 deg. for narrow angle
