I have a 5.7 Mercruiser with approx. 825hrs on it. Has great compression, as I was running the boat today, I noticed the oil pressure gauge go to "0", and before I could turn the engine off ,it shut down on its own. When I opened the hatch to see the issue there was oil all over the starboard side of the engine room, I was able to narrow it down to where the the oil most likely came from...the oil filter seal either went ( hard to believe ) or the lines to the remote filter location lost a seal and allowed oil to release in the bilge area. After looking it over I filled the engine back up with oil and I was surprised it only took 1.5 qts to get it full again, I attempted to start the engine, which it fired right back up but only ran for 30 sec for it shut down. I tried again but this time it would not turn over at all.

Questions :

Should I assume the engine is dead ?

What is a guesstimate cost to replace a 5.7L engine ?

Advice is appreciated.

depending on the year the oil pressure switch could be cutting ignition, did it build oil pressure when you restarted it again? Did it leak when you restarted it and it ran for 30 seconds?

I had a complete rebuild done on our last boat with twin 350's for about $2,500 on the engine, then the cost to R&R the engine and the haul out.
