One of my first jobs besides teak, wax, more wax and a bottom job and more wax is to do something about my refridgerator, a Norcold DE 461. I know the compressor is bad. Did you know a bad compressor can burn up a brand new power supply? :smt013 I have priced a new cooling unit for the Norcold and a power supply and it is almost 2/3 the cost of a new unit. Here is my question. I saw a 4.4 cu. ft. Whirlpool (the Norcold is 6.3) for about $200 bucks that would suit my needs fine, since I am usually the only one on the boat anyway. It would also give me more room in the galley for cabinets etc. I know a marine unit is supposed to run up to 30 degrees off level but what are some other differences? Is there a reason the marine units are priced like they are or is it another "boat thing?"

The "DE" part means "dual electric", or AC/DC. I assume the $200 dorm room unit is AC-only.

I know people who are ok with that, but beginning a defrost cycle every time you leave the dock doesn't seem like a great idea to me. (unless you run a genny all the time)

That's true. No gen is usually a No Go on my boat. If for no other reason than it needs to be excercised too.
