I am attempting to install a mast on the bow so I can properly hoist day shapes. I am interested in a couple of things and hoping you can help

1. Can anyone direct me to a good stainless mast for the bow

2. What are you all using for day shapes? Do you have a picture

3. Where is the "mast" on your boat?

I have a 460DA so there really isn't a ton of options that I see other then the bow

Thanks in advance

Josh

Apparently I mistakenly posted this in the classified. Can someone help me move it?

Marine vessel day shapes........... For communication...

There are five types of day shapes: Circle, Diamond, Cone Apex Pointed Up, Cone Apex Pointed Down, and a Cylinder. All day shapes are black in color. See the USCG Navigational Rules.
1) At Anchor - Single round ball
2) Aground - Three round balls in a vertical line.
3) Making way with sails up and motor on - Inverted cone ( only required for sailboats, 12 meters or larger ).
4) Dredging or making way with an obstruction on one side - Two green lights or two diamonds in a vertical line to indicate the side safe to pass. ( Diamonds are a sailors best friend - Thus, safe to pass. ) Two red lights or two circles in a vertical line to indicate the side which has the obstruction.
5) Vessel not under command - Two round balls in a straight line.
6) Vessel restrained by draft - A cylinder.
7) Vessel restricted in her maneuverability - Three shapes in a straight line. The top and the bottom are a ball and the middle is a diamond.
8) Vessel engaged in fishing - Two cones in a vertical line with their apexes pointed at the center.

Basically I am only interested in the anchor ball. We have quite a bit of commercial traffic here so I want to properly display the ball.

Would the scuba flag be considered a day shape? And if so would it be legal to display that on the mast? That may have to be at the surface of the water? Just curious?

Technically diving is excluded from dayshapes in the COLREGs as I read them.

It's definitely legal to display in the mast. I think it's required technically.

I've never seen them used on the Great Lakes or western rivers or Puget Sound. Am I just not seeing them or are not many boaters using them?

We carry and use dayshapes always. As you say, the primary use is a ball shape at anchor. We have plastic, two piece shapes that slide together, but I have no recollection as to where I got them or the brand. Being just under 20 meters, we can get away with this smaller version of the 0.6 meter diameter requirement. We store the ball in the anchor locker and fly it from the bow rail, no mast, just because it's easy. As an alternative, I would use one of my vhf antennas as a mast. This would get the shape higher and more visible, but is more of a pain to rig.

Thanks sea gulf. If you think of it I would love a pic of what you do.

Go first class: I think many boaters just don't follow this rule. Being we are in a major commercial port I think it's important because if an accident were to happen I'm sure the court system would weigh heavily on this just like an anchor light at night.

You're probably correct. Out here in the wild, wild west, ain't nobody gonna run into me if I'm anchored. I hope. :wow:
