Did some remodeling to my dash for the 2006 Season. Mods inlcude a 1" thick 100 yr old piece of Mahogany with 6 or so coats of epoxy and 6 or so coats of Varnish. Lowrance LMF 400 gauges that incorporate NMEA200. A Raymarine E120 (had a C120 last year), and Blue Sea weather deck switches. The dash turned out great, it is very simple but has the right bells and whistles to keep my situational awareness peaked at all times. Plus my stereo also plays DVD's so I can watch movies when I'm just hanging out on the boat. A seldom used feature....but why not?

There is nothing that sets a boat off any more than a well done and finished mahogany or teak anything. You certainly have that "finish" thing figured out.

But, why so many coats of epoxy?

The more coats of epoxy the deeping looking the finish. You can get the finish deep looking from multiple coats of something, whether it is eposxy or varnish. If it is epoxy it will last as long as the boat as long as there is always a few coats of varnish over it. So every year, or every other year I can just add a few coats of varnish and manitain that deep look, instead of having to add like 12 coats of varnish!
