The Admiral and I finished up a nice cruise and pulled into our slip at the marina around 9:30 last night. Secured the boat and were walking up to the parking lot. Bumped into 2 guys and a girl (should say they were grown adults) who were aboard a small cruiser tied to the outside of the first covered slip. We know them casually as they are normally on another dock, and the woman walked up the the Admiral and said, "I'm a little drunk and we're going for a swim", and she was wearing a PFD. My parting words to all three were "Ya'll be careful." Then we got to our car and left. Phone rings about 9:00 this morning and one of my dockmates said, "Did you hear what happened last night? There was a drowning last night."
Turns out one of the guys (neither was wearing a PFD - you know the "I'm a strong swimmer" complex) climbed back on the boat to get another beer. Whether he slipped and fell in or jumped in no one knows, but he didn't surface. Rescue personnel recovered his body around 4:00 this afternoon. Senseless!

A sad story, prayers to the family and friends who will bear the pain of this stupidity.

And I was ridiculed awhile back for suggesting boating was dangerous and needed great caution and proper equipment onboard for what if...

You don't even know what happened and you're throwing around the term 'stupidity'.:smt101

The story made it pretty clear, drunk swimming off a boat at the marina. What would you call it?

Swimming in the dark, No PFD, potential for ESD.

If by story you mean the first post it doesn't say the guy was drunk. Maybe you missed this part.

Maybe he had a heart attack, maybe he got a cramp, maybe he slipped and fell, who knows....you don't know at this point. How about swimming without a life jacket? Is every one that does that 'stupid' in your eyes? If I had to wear a life jacket every time I dove in the water my new boat hook would still by laying on the bottom.

Possibly just a tragic accident, but on my boat, I don't care if it's Michael Phelps, NO ONE goes in the drink with out a PFD. Unless you can stand up comfortably without getting lake water in your beer.
