Hi Dave,

I am a new Sea Ray owner. Bought a new 2006 Amberjack 290 two weeks ago. Only have 3 1/2 hours of boat time on it, and it is being winterized today.

Which Sea Ray are you making your trip in? My wife wants to take a similar trip but feels out 290 is too small.

Thanks for all the pix...they are super,

Sam

Thanks and howdy Sam. Our boat ia a 450 Dancer. You should do a trip on the ICW and I'm sure the Amberjack will do the job on the ocean also.

The trip or any potion of, even in segments is a very fullfilling boating experience. We love it!

Sam,

May I suggest that you start with several shorter local trips. Find a friendly marina 30 -60 miles away and plan a long weekend there. You will find out quickly if your boat is big enough. We travel with a couple of Boston Terriers and a 3-5 day trip is great and a lot of fun......but past a week and a 450DA begins to get small for us.

As far as sea conditions and the size of the boat is concerned, just use good judgment and leave some slack in your schedule in case of windy or stormy weather. Many times having to get home on a certain day forces people to think they have no choice but to go, but truthfully, sometimes the best decision is to stay an extra day or 2 until a front passes. Other than that and the fuel requirement for a 290AJ, there is no reason the boat isn't up to a trip like Dave's.

Dave:

We just came back from Hilton Head this evening by car. Which marina are you dock at? We saw two 450s at Shelter Cove and one at Harbor Town. We were wondering if any of these were yours. Thanks for the great pictures. Where was that picture of the boat that is upside taken? It looks like it was taken just South of Charleston below Wapoo Cut.

Have a great day

Dave,

Thanks for the pictures  Trip sounded great. :smt038

Hi Paul, we just missed each other, I left yesterday morning, when were you at the Hilton Head marinas? There are also 450 s at Wexford, Windmill and skull creek. Were the 450 s nice looking? Where do you do your boating?

Yes you are correct that capsized boat was as you describe it, south of Charlston.

Dave

We were at Hilton Head this weekend for a meeting, no boat. We came by Skull Creek (Shelter Cove) Saturday afternoon for lunch and to look for a friends boat. We saw 3 450's there two were good looking and the other was immaculate.

Saturday night we ate at the Quarter Deck in Harbor Town and had a great meal. They are going to close for January but if your in town before then it was a great meal on par with Rue de Jean. We only saw one 450 there but they had some other eye candy that was very big. One of the yachets had a huge plasma screen on deck with video cameras letting everyone see themselves as they walked by. Was he sending a subtle message?

We mainly boat in Hartwell in the upstate but go to Charleston every year and then down the ICW. This is a very pretty trip. Thanks for the pictures Dave.

Have a great day

Paul

Dave,

Great thread! I dream about this trip every year when we get our first forecast of the white stuff (which is tomorrow :smt089 ). Luckily we had a good one today so I could finally blanket up our AJ for its long winters nap.

Happy Holidays!

The crew of Reel A Lure

Thanks Dave,

Indeed very nice post.

Only I missed the Lobster pic  .

 Peter
