I'm looking for ideas/opinions on some kind of custom mount for my rectangular Magma BBQ. I had happily been using the Magma LeveLock Rod Holder Mount in the Scotty Rod Holders already installed in the gunwales on my 2005 320DA. However, this year we had a full campertop enclosure made up to replace the factory fastback roof (an upgrade we are extremely happy with) - but the problem is that the roof support now gets in the way of the BBQ. I was thinking about trying to get some kind of custom bracket made up that still uses the Scotty Rod Holders, but then bends out over the side of the boat so that the BBQ hangs out more-or-less over the water. I'm inserting a crude diagram to (hopefully) show what I am trying to describe.

I know I could go with a swim platform mount, but my dinghy lives back there and we do use the BBQ in the marina so I'd rather not have to take the dinghy off just to BBQ. I did get one of those kettle BBQ's with a Scotty Rod Holder mount that was angled enough out that it was away from the roof supports, but I am not really impressed with the kettle style BBQ - too many flare ups and you have to take the whole thing apart to clean the grease tray. I much prefer the rectangular grill.

Has anyone done anything similar? Any pros or cons to this idea? Suggestions as to where to go to get something like this made (Welding Shop, Fabricator, Machine Shop, Plumbing Shop)???

In this picture the roof support is swung out of the way (red arrow), but this was during the install of the roof and the finished product it is going towards the stern and is fixed so I can't move it.

You could use rail mounts to mount it off of the "trunk" on the transom. Even a rail mount rod holder. That way it's not directly to the swim platform.

A member here Dave @dtfeld made a real nice mount for his bbq, perhaps he can post that link.

Got this awhile back.

Will install before our next overnight out.

Using it with a Webber BABY Q which I have mounted to a piece of black starboard & a gimbal mount which I used in a rod holder for decades.

This mount will allow me to save the swim platform real estate AND get the grill away from the new cockpit upholstery.

BEST !

There used to be a product called the Grill-a-Mount that was a really great way to mount a table or in my case a custom grill mount/table off the trunk. Unfortunately, no longer made. I set it up to be able to use a Weber Q1200 on the boat. Still going strong several years later.

Recently a new product was advertised and I think it could be modified to accomplish the same thing.

Thanks everyone, all very good suggestions! However, with the dinghy on the back I've only got maybe 5 or 6 inches of space between the transom and the dinghy which is just enough to walk by, but I can't see myself standing in there trying to BBQ, and I don't want to be kneeling on the back seat trying to BBQ either. I'm assuming that @Maybe A Dancer plans on mounting that bracket on the transom?

I did come across an entry in an old post where @Creekwood mentioned he had a custom bracket that sounds very much like what I am contemplating - hopefully he can chime in with some words of wisdom on this.

Thanks all!

I like the way that you think, unfortunately The Admiral doesn’t necessarily agree. :-(

Yes, on the transom.

There is an offset/recess on the stbd side just stbd of the lazarette door.

Plan at this time is to put the mount there, then stow the brill & support on board only when needed.

As in all yhings boating, it's a compromise !

On my last boat I had surface mounted Scotty downrigger mounts where the downrigger base slid into the mount from the inside.

I had a metal fabricator make me an aluminum bbq mount that was basically two square 1/2” aluminum plates with and angled 10” bar welded to them and an angle joining them. The bottom plate was size to slide into the downrigger mount. The top was sized to be used as a mount base for the Magma grill.

I wire brushed it and used white epoxy appliance spray paint to coat it. That worked great. No peeling or chipping even after 5 years of use.

The angle of the bar was enough to put the grill slightly over the lake with the front of the tray even with the gunwhale so it was out of the way. You could have it welded to angle left or right as well as out. It was great for that boat (25ft small cruiser) to keep it out of the way when being used.

Well now it seems @Creekwood has me thinking about an alternative (call it "Plan B"). I also have a downrigger mount near the rod holder mount. Perhaps I can use that as a base for my BBQ mount? I may not even need to offset it over the side if there is enough room for the Magma BBQ. When some of this snow melts I'm going to have to head down to the boat and do a little measuring. Thanks for the feedback!

Actually that one is for diesel. I have a diesel furnace which has a small (5gal?) tank. I imagine it’s not a good idea to use that for a BBQ mount

Hmmmm. Now you got me thinking. Maybe I should stick with my original plan for an offset bracket to keep the grill out over the water. That’ll also keep it away from that diesel filler plate and the gas one just over the edge of the transom.

I believe your last comment is what Mitch was alluding to. You want that grill as far away as you can from a GAS fill - especially since your gas fill also doubles as the vent (I believe that's the style used on your boat?). It's the gas FUMES that will get you! :)

Good point! I just checked the owners manual and the fuel vent is more mid-ship on the port side, so that should be ok. Although the head vent would be close to the BBQ so that too could be dangerous

Ha! It may be MORE dangerous depending on who used the head last!
