Cummins impellers

Every year if you don't want to have issues. Pretty cheap insurances really.

I'm on the 2 year plan for both intercooler and impellers, and sometimes find breakage. It all collects in the intercooler.

Yearly is a good plan if you have access

My diesel guy has been servicing marine diesels for 30 years and he recommends every two years. He said he rarely sees them fail at under two years with normal recreational usage (~150 hours/year).

Do them every year! I have SMX pumps and tried to go two years with a total impeller failure on one and missing blades on the other. I could have ruined the engine as it happened right after I pulled the power back to cruise from a full power check. Would have been real bad at full power as it will overheat so fast your brain does even think what your seeing is real. I was also do for my every other year aftercooler maintenance so I was able to remove the pieces very easily. Dont be cheep they only cost 90 bucks and could cost a lot more if they fail. I have some pictures I will post when I have more time. When they failed they had slightly less than 300 hours on them. Hope this helps.

I pulled mine out in the winter layovers, stored them on the galley countertop to allow the vanes to open up, and got three years out of them, replacing them after three years while they still looked like new.

great input ... all advice appreciated NOW... what should it COST to have impellers changed in 2 QSC Cummins diesels?

I have 6CTA-i8.3's, and I paid $135 for 2 main engine impellers and the Onan 9KW Generator impeller.

Ha! Good luck with $135 on the QSC. The impellers are nearly impossible to pull without pulling off the pump (10 bolts and 2 o-rings) because of the wiring harness right forward of the pumps. You are looking at least 2 hours of labor and $150 for each impeller. Plan on $600.

I average 100 hers per season . I change impellers every 3years now 4years . They come out perfect

Still running Sherwood

I no longer own my 390DA and moved onto another vessel with twin QSC's. JVII is correct that the impellers are less than pleasant to remove and replace. Just did both mine yesterday. Impeller puller like the attached worked great. I just temporarily zip tied the wire harness to be more out of the way. I did have to shorten the plastic handle of the puller by cutting about 1" off it. Alternatively could have used a bolt. Took 10 mins to get old impellers out and about 45mins - 1 hour of fussing on each to get new ones in. Getting the splines lined up is a PITA...at least for me it was. Plenty of dawn soap and some wide zip ties to hold the blades down.

Hey Todd - Long time! Hope you are well. Moved out to Seattle 3 years ago and loving the boating out this way. Got into a 2014 48' Sabre Salon Express (shhh...still like reading the info on this forum). It was down to that and a Sea Ray 510 dancer. Same exact power plants in each and same drives. Obviously a different style of boat outside of that. Both cruisers though.

You still enjoying Long Island Sound I assume?

Checking here to find out about location and costs of changing impellers on a 2001 400 Sedan Bridge. These are Cummins engines 430Hp Twin Diesels 6CTA Diamond series. We were given a quote of $2000 to replace both impellers which seems high. I noticed $600 above. We are East Coast in NY. Also, can anyone post a picture of the location of the impellers? Thanks.
