Hello everyone,
Brand new member to ClubSeaRay, I have been reading through the old post and have already obtained so much great information, what a great resource. I currently have an offer in on my first Sea Ray (2002 410 Sea Ray Express). The boat has passed sea trial and survey(boat and hull) but I would like to have the Cummins 6CTA 8.3L engines surveyed by a Cummins expert. The boat is currently located at Kent Narrows, MD. If anyone can put me in touch with a surveyor I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.
Steve

Steve, welcome. I would ask Cummins to check your engines. There is a service center in Glen Burnie, ph. 410.590.8700. Because of its location, this center has lots of marine engine-experienced techs; I have never been disappointed by any of them. In addition to having the Cummins proprietary (I think) diagnostic tools, they will be able to check for any past experience Cummins has with your engines. If you end up getting the boat I predict you will be well-served by having a relationship with them any way. They will make you pay for the travel time of the tech who visits the boat and they are not cheap by the hour.

Hi Steve,
I used Ritchie Sommers at SHore Power Solutions on Kent Island. He is certfied and has all the equipment and knowledge to give you a good survey, and they are right there. Not to say Cummins wouldn't but they were real backed up when I had mine done last year. Ritchie is reasonable and will tell you like it is. If you call you will most likely talk to Dana she can get you in touch with Ritchie and set up an appointment----

Your insurance company and finance institution, if you are going to finance, will require the surveys to be performed by a SAMS accredited person. So, whom ever you get make sure they have the credentials.

Steve,

I bought my boat with 6CTA's a year ago August. Had a Marine Survey on the Boat, and a Cummins survey on the engines. With respect to the engines, the survey revealed no problems. Having read everything that I could on this site and others, I requested the maintenance records on the aftercoolers. They could not produce any documentation on the aftercoolers. As a condition of sale, I had the aftercoolers pulled and inspected....and I'm glad that I did. The port side element was fused in the housing. This does NOT show up on a looksee through the zinc fitting. You MUST know the condition of the raw water cooling system. The parts alone for the aftercooler are now $3400...for just one side!

I now have 1.5 seasons and 130 hours on my "new" aftercooler. I will have my aftercoolers pulled, inspected, and regreased either late next summer or early 2019.
