CSR Rules

ok, maybe i read this 101 post topic too rapidly and missed the instruction manual, but is it possible for someone to give a quick synopsis (or refer me to that area where the synopsis was already given) as to...
1. how to give a rating to a particular post by a particular member
2. how to see your own ratings and comments in user CP. the anonymity factor is a great call, btw and i dont want to know who said what about me, but i have 18 points and only see one comment [under latest reputation]. for all i know i had 16 good posts and 8 negative ones. and if i suck, i could certainly benefit from seeing constructive (or destructive) criticism. couldnt we all benefit from it. maybe then we can all just get along.

Dumb. I was for this rating system, but I can see now how this can turn into something infantile. It is easy to mask yourself and make a negative comment basically, behind someone's back, without manning up to the comment.

Case in point, I received a comment about a thread I started in the holding tank regarding beer.

BEER!

The comment I got in my CP for this rating thing is:

"What does this have to do with boating?"

Geezaloo...first off, beer has EVERYTHING to do with boating, at least to the normal people I know, and secondly, I even put it in the HOLDING TANK section so as to keep it out of general discussion.

Man, some of you dorks must be real fun to hang out with in real life :wow:

Click on the little scale in the upper right hand corner.

Approve or Disapprove, then add comments and hit enter.

Receive immediate feedback in the form of a fortune cookie.

I can't remember the details (see other link above), but basically, a little green square is an ok guy. A little red square means possible flamer. Gray means neutral, and black means he has a black-hull boat (actually has taken himself out of the grading system). 2 little greeen squares means you're Frank W - a helpful expert. There are more positive symbols that we'll see over time.

To see your own ratings, click on the UserCP link and view the bottom half. The little squares next to the names are their own ratings, not the ones they have to you.

thanks for shedding light. i read that first post (more like skimmed) and didnt catch the part about "reputation." and i did NOT notice the tiny little scan icon at all!

yesterday i had 18 points, now i'm up to 44 points. if i only have 2 comments does that mean that a bunch of people "approved this message" but only two made a comment?

I have tried to make the settings so that user comments are not viewable. There is no need to leave comments or view that, that will do nothing but start fights as seen above. If anybody can still see user comments please let me know. There are so many permissions in this software it is nuts, plus each have to be applied to every type of user.

Please stop overthinking this system, you will drive yourself nuts. Its simply a little visual queue to see at a glance if somebody has given good info in the past. If you choose not to use the system I have replaced the little black dot with a white dot so no dot shows at all. No harm no foul.

I can replace the gray dot with white too if anybody thinks that is a good thing. The whole idea of this system is to allow the users to sniff out and identify the people that routinely give bad advice. There are only a few here and are typically people that do a "post & run" so they won't even be here long enough to get a red dot. So please stop overthinking it

Jim,

Just once and for all, can you please specify what the holding tank is for...

I have always assumed it is for off topic posts that may not have anything to do with boating but as a place to let loose (to a degree, I understand) and get to know each other socially and as a community who may have some varied interests or conversations.

I used to see the number of positive points I had in the user CP but I don't now. All I see are the infractions and "negative points". Is that normal?

Maybe it's in a white font or secret hidden font and you have to rub the computer screen with lemon juice to see it.

Ok, ok, ok, excuse me for not reading every single post in this thread, yet, as I just took a look and finished the first page. i wanted to reply before the tears from my eyes dried up.
That list Gary posted was hilarious, sheesh! :smt043:smt043Wesleys reponse was just as funny...but I think he was serious?!

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I like the rating system. I have been concerned for some time about the accuracy and quality of some of the information posted on CSR........like the "tighten your packing nuts" fix offered to an '07 model boat w/outdrive power (yes, Jim, knowing engine and drive type is important) ---poor guy is still probably looking for the packing glands on his i/o...........

I believe over time, if we will use the system, it will be a meaningful way to measure the level of trust you can put in various member's posts. As far as it being a popularity contest, there may be some of that in the beginning but when the new wears off, voting for your buddy becomes overhead and most people won't waste the time.

Lets just use the system for what it is supposed to be and not over-analyze it or make a human relations experiment out of it.

Now I know why my "positive points" went away... My slight disagreement with Frank W. on EPIRB thread must have been a really bad infraction. ;-)
