Alex,
It looks like we will join the group in Newport and proceed to E. Greenwich and Block. Are we at the point where we should book slips?

Sorry if you'll be skipping West Neck Harbor, Mike. At this time I'd say that only IBYM is the only one that was settled. Based on some earlier post, I'd say that the final marina in Newport is yet TBD, but if I understand correctly Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina was in the lead. It looks like it's between Goat Island and NHHM.

Shall we have quick poll going? Who's voting for what marina?

Our vote is Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina. I know it is pricier, but the location and pool work for me.

Sorry for the delay Alex, we are a go for Shelter (marina), as well as Newport, we have stayed in all the typical transient marinas in Newport over the years, I would say that our top picks would be Newport Harbor Hotel, and Newport Yachting Center. There really isn't a bad marina in Newport... We may go from Newport straight to Block, you now me, need my Block time!

My wife and I are trying to figure out our plans. As of right now we are planning on joining the group in Newport then heading to E. Greenwich and Block. Our vote for Newport is Newport Harbor hotel which we would take a slip at. We were talking last night about rafting with the group at E. Greenwich and Block as we really like the idea to be with the group on the raft. The problem is that if it is warmer than 68deg out and humid, AC overnight is a must (I know I am a wimp) but I have a gas generator. How do the guys with gas generators that stay overnight on the hook deal with this situation? Don't run them overnight like many suggest is a really bad idea and deal with the heat and humidity like a man or do some feel it is safe run them so they have AC. I have 3 working CO detectors onboard. The 1 built in detector and 2 more home type detectors. I have my children on board so I am not interested in taking any risk with CO poisoning. Also, how do others in the raft feel about someone running a gas genny overnight? I know the best answer is to man up and buy a diesel boat which is in the works for the future but for now I am dealing with what I have to work with. (Mike we have our eye on the 48 Sundancer as an upgrade so maybe a tour would be possible?) I am ok with the answers either way, I have read most of the generator threads so if I am an idiot for suggesting it is safe to run it then just tell me and we will get slips at E. Greenwich and Block no problem. I won't pull all my posts and run away. Looking forward to meeting up with everyone again.

Our vote is for Newport Harbor Hotel as well for the same reasons Harold mentioned.

Larry,
Get ready for some arm twisting. Worst case I'll tow you to Greenwich in the middle of the night. BTW, no one told you that you have to leave Block on Sun. Once we get there, stay as long as you need. I don't think I'll be leaving Sun either.

Jeremy,
Running gas genny in a raft was not a problem with our group. The main factors we need to watch out for are, what the wind is doing and how the raft is positioned in relation to the wind. We might need to spin the raft to be with the wind. The worst case scenario is NO WIND at all. But, as you know it's extremely rare in Block, Greenwich is another story. Other option, run an extension cord to a 220VAC diesel boat to run your AC overnight. So, as you can see, there are always options, we'll just need to determine what's the most appropriate in a given situation.

Having said that, I think you're ready to be moved to the list pf participants.

From what I'm hearing regarding the Newport marina, so far everyone has voted for Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina. Let's lock it up and call it a day.

Jeremy, we had the same concerns about running the generator as you last season and rightfully so. However we now have 3 additional CO sensors onboard (we've even added a smoke detector to the cabin) and added about 150 hrs to the genny last season. We've never tripped one of the sensors while at anchor. That being said when we joined the raft for the last day in Block we were rafted with Harold on our starboard and Ron on our port. Harold ran his genny and we had no issues. We however ran our genny and we set off the CO alarm on Ron and Wendy's boat (I think this was due to an open window). We are pretty comfortable running the gen while anchored by ourselves however it is a concern while rafted. I would say your concerns are valid as are ours. Maybe we can give serious consideration to how the gas guys running gens are placed in the raft.

Dean,

I think this answers some of your questions.

"...The main factors we need to watch out for are, what the wind is doing and how the raft is positioned in relation to the wind. We might need to spin the raft to be with the wind. The worst case scenario is NO WIND at all...."

Obviously, the biggest difference between staying on the hook solo vs. raft, is that a large raft doesn't spin (we usually have stern anchors). By having one or more gas boats that plan on running their gennies overnight, we need to treat the whole raft as GAS boats raft. Positioning the raft with the wind must be a priority.

I too have a gas boat and am planning to raft. As I did last year, I will need to run the generator virtually the entire trip whenever I am not on shore power. In addition to running the A/C for the Admiral, my son and the dog; my refrigerator is operating on 110v ONLY. If I do not run the generator I will loose the food, and Heaven forbid, THE BEER, in the fridge. Plugging into someone else may not work to well for me, or the other boat, as I have 2 a/c's, the fridge, and an icemaker all running on the 110v circuit. As Alex said, we can factor in the wind, or lack thereof, and can make the decisions when we get to the destinations as to direction of the raftup and positioning within the raft up. Keeping me on the outside, starboard side, may work best as my generator exhaust is on the starboard side.

As Jeremy said, getting a diesel boat is something I want to do also, one day, but since I did not win the Power Ball or Mega-Millions, it is not happening today.:smt089

It could always happen tomorrow Harold!

Dean, as they say, all it takes is a $1 and a dream!!!! Unfortunately, I have more dreams than dollars!!!

My Reservation at Island Boat Yard is made! (what can I say, I am bored at work today)
I left a message for the dockmaster at NHHM.

I've been trying to search but can't seem to find it. Can somebody tell me what the choices are for each port? Docking, mooring, or rafting. And if docking and mooring Is the only option what's the prices. Im sorry I havnt been paying attention. I hate looking at things that I want to do but can't. But now I may be able to soI have some catching up to do

1. West Neck Harbor, Shelter Island - slip at Island Boat Yard - $4.50 per foot or raft
2. Newport, RI - slip at Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina - $5.25 per foot or Mooring - $???
3. East Greenwich, RI - slip at ??? or raft-up
4. Block Island - slip at Champlins' - $??? per foot or raft-up

Alex has a chart with who is staying where.

I can relate to the pain, Harold. Same here, my friend.

Guys, just a reminder. I always put all basic info info on the first page. Anytime you forget something (port, marina, dates, etc.) just go to the first page.

I just updated info for all the ports. If anyone would like to be in a marina in Greenwich, let us know and we'll get that organized. For now, I'll assume everyone is rafting.

Do you think anybody will b rating up at shelter? If I do decide to join i will be rafting in all destinations and mooring at the second. I think I remember hearing mooring balls are first come first serve at Newport? What are the chances of grabbing one and are you aloud 2 boats to a ball? Anybody have a price for mooring? Again I apologize if this was discussed already
