CSR Northeast Flotilla 2015

Ross,
What is the boat in your signature picture? Is there a new addition to your family?

Shhh! What boat?

Does Yulia know??? My father tried that once, bought a new boat at the NYC Boat Show with the $5 he had in his pocket for the deposit. My mother almost divorced him! She did not speak to him for a week!

do we have dates for Newport and is that a confirmed stop at this point? I'll call and reserve if so. We like slips, so if Block or Shelter, let me know if I have to call.
BTW, if you need a bigger boat, this is anchored off my hotel in PR right now. http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/...private-yachts-the-super.html?s=image_gallery

Mike,

At this point we're all settled with Shelter (Island Boat Yard) for the weekend of 8/1 (arriving Sat departing Mon). So, call them for your reservations.

As for Newport, even though it's one of the ports we most likely will go, we still have to determine the order of ports to have exact dates for reservations.

We would be pleased with the current plan. I've always wanted to do the Newport and RI thing.
P1- WNH
P1-Newport
P1-East Greenwich
P1- Montaulk
P2- Block

I will book a slip(if needed)at Island Boatyard for the benefit of the group but I'll raft
in Newport, are the prices really $5.25 per foot, 3 nights? (Like $700.00 after taxes). I'd like to Marina but holy crap! I guess that would mean staying 3 nights or do we forfeit one for the 4th stop?
Don't know anything about East Greenwich, but sounds like a raft spot
Montaulk seems like a marina spot
Block raft

I guess we would prefer Montaulk over block since we've never been, but with no arm twisting we'd be ok with block. In fact if we go to block and the weather is good we may stay a little longer.

Ross,

Yes, Newport is $5.25 p/f + electr. But, since we'll be there just after the Jazz Festival, we're not required to stay 3 nights there. BTW, I've checked couple of other places and they're priced in the same range.

Keep your votes and feedback coming...

I've cleaned up the spreadsheet a bit and here's what the latest version looks like:

Given the ports on the list, I think Newport would make a good 2nd stop. It would be a good run from Shelter but not too far. Then having East Greenwich, as Alex said, would make a nice change back to rafting with water activities. IMO the last question is Montauk or Block for the last port.

Correction is made, Russ.

It looks like the ports are starting to form in a logical itinerary:

Port 1: Shelter Isl (WNH)
Port 2: Newport
Port 3: E. Greenwich
Port 4: Block

Choosing_Port.jpg

As I mentioned earlier, I personally was debating the 4th port between Block, Montauk, Watch Hill or Fishers Isl. Out of them all I would say that Block makes most sense for everyone (considering that we have people coming from different directions).

If we're all in agreement, we need to form a list of boats going to marina in Newport and I'll send it to dockmast.

If anyone has better choice than Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina, please post your ideas.

I think we have our itinerary!!

We will be staying in the marina at Newport. As I have never been there before, I will defer to everyone else as to choice of marina.

...As far as Newport is concerned The Newport Harbor Hotel has changed management and long time assistant dockmaster Heather is back and now the Dockmaster. The property now has a Tiki Bar out back along with an indoor pool. The price is somthing like $5.25/ft. Let me know if I can help in any way

Mike,

Do you think that Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina is the best choice for the group? Other choices right in the town I see:
- Newport Shipyard
- Bannisters Wharf Marina
- Newport Yachting Center
- Forty 1 North
- Newport Marina

Further but still within a town reach:
- Goat Island Marina

Update: I just spoke to Goat Island Marina. They offered a group discount (need around 10 boats) rate of $4.00 p/f. You can check all the amenities on the web, but here's a quick info. You get all necessary services, water, elect, wifi, cable, etc. They don't have a pool. There's restaurant on site, it's a party place. Even though the marina is a distance away, they say it's only 15-20 min walk to the town. There's also a water shuttle that takes you from their fuel dock right to the town for $3 p/p. The shuttle runs from early AM until after midnight.

If you have bikes (we have folding bikes on board all the time now), I would encourage you to bring them. There's tons of places to tour by bikes in Newport and it'll be very helpful if the group decides to stay at GIM. Of course you can rent them, if I recall they're about $7 per hour.

While we're on the subject of bikes, it would be cool if we can do a group bike tour to Ocean Drive, as one of our group activities.

BTW guys, we also need to make the list of who's taking a slip in Island Boat Yard (WNH). Need at least 12 slips.

I'll take a slip in WNH. Hopefully we'll have some latecomers I can pawn it off on.
Also I'll take a slip in Newport. Goat island is fine too. We will also bring bikes. Can't wait!

Newport Shipyard - No Way - caters only to the mega-rich
41 North - also a no go - really snobby
Newport Yachting center - good option - loud- all side tie - in the middle of everything
Bannisters - too small - all side tie - next door/attached to NHH - good for overflow if NHH full
Bowens Warf - next pier over - may not have enough room also in the middle of everything
Newport Marina - good option - pool in parking lot
West wind - party place at end of strip - tight basin
Newport on shore - docominiums but transient rentals handled by office - unlikely to get enough slips close together
Newport Harbor Hotel - my personal favorite - best location - great facilities - can fill up quick though
Goat Island - far walk to town - short dinghy ride (multiple dinghy docks available in town) also a water taxi - the south floating docks are terrible - the rest of the slips are a mixed bag - some good some really hard to get into/tight - many side tie - for a short stay definitely tolerable - if you dont mind the dinghy/bike/shuttle or walk to town, this is actually not a bad option - I was thinking of moving here from NHH if I kept my boat north this season because it is a little less of a transient marina and includes parking... they could also probably arrange catering and give you a place for a "feast" (might be pricey though)

Mike, Thanks for the information.

For Newport, I think I am in favor of Newport Harbor Hotel or Goat Island. I don’t mind paying a couple of extra shekels to be at the “best location.” I am trying to think of a way of bringing our bicycles so that they don’t get in the way. I may lay them on the deck or stand them by the side rails. If I can’t come up with a good option, we will just rent bikes for the day (I have a call into Goat Island to ask about bike rentals).

As I said before, we will get a slip in Newport.
I would like to raft up in Shelter, but if need be we will take a slip.

Great info, Mike.

When I spoke to GIM, they also mentioned that even they'll find room, IF we do an advance reservation very soon, chances are we won't be one next to each other.

Ross/Harold, I'm the same way as you guys. I prefer to be rafted, but for now I'll put myself on the list of slip holders just to contribute in order to make the 12 slips requirement.

So far I've gather the following people for IBYM slips:

1. "Alex F": "Inspiration" 420DB
2. "h-gerry": "Zuzu's Petal's II" 400 EC
3. "Busterman": "Boat-RYME" 390EC
4. "JV II": "Julia Valentine" 48DA

If I missed anyone, please let me know.

Who else is willing to take a slip in IBYM (Shelter)?

Alex, please put us down for a slip as well.

I stayed at the Newport Marina on the way back from the floatilla last year. They were really nice. The docks are very well maintained. The marina is quiet. The little pool is perfect for the kids. It is a short walk to great restaurants and an awesome breakfast place. Stripers galore under the docks. It has my vote.

We have stayed at Newport Harbor hotel 3 times now, the 2 most recent where last year before meeting up with the group in Block and then again for the Newport boat show. Everyone there is really nice and helpful. Perfect location, it right downtown and you can walk to many places from there. The facilities are great as well with the pool and nice docks. They do cram boats in there but as long as they know your intinerary we have not had a problem yet. Nothing like they do at champlins, no one is rafted off of each other.

Alex, where are the ports shaping up to be in the timeline? last weekend in block? which days and where in East Greenwich? etc. This will determine our participation. Ididntdoit pretty much hit the nail on the head from our experience. One option you may be overlooking is Conanicut on Jamestown and they have a great shuttle that runs to Newport, very quiant and another great spot in RI.

Here's what I have so far. If you guys see something missing, let me know.
