Good morning all,

I have bad news and I have good news.

I'll start with bad news. I just got off the phone with Taylor's Isl and was told that a Yacht Club had booked the weekend of 8/1 while back. On the weekend of 8/9 they're having their annual fund raiser. So, unfortunately this option is no longer available this year.

The good news is that our 2nd preference (Island Boat Yard at West Neck Harbor) is still available and I had asked them to reserve the weekend of 8/1-8/2 for us. So, our docking and feast arrangement will be the same as last year.

Their site: http://www.islandboatyard.com/index.html

Those that are new to the Flotilla or don't recall the details, IBY is a small marina with only 20 slips of different sizes. The largest boat we had there was "Fra Diavlo" 540DA. So, as you can imagine, the space for larger boats is limited. We need to book at least 12-14 slips in order to be eligible for use of their property for the feast and other activities. As you recall, last year the flotilla had taken pretty much almost all of the 20 slips. Those that didn't have room or just at their will was rafted in the designated anchorage, which is also limited.

Having said that, let's make the list of boats that are going to IBY Marina and let's start calling with reservations.

As I'm looking at the votes for the ports, it becomes clear that majority is in favor of Shelter Island (Taylor's or WNH). Since TI is not available I had crossed it off the list and moved all P1s from TI to WNH. I think at this point it's obvious that it'll be our Port #1, where we'll also have our feast.

It looks like we have decent response regarding Newport and E. Greenwich. A quick comment on Newport. Based on my findings on the web, the 2015 Jazz Festival is happening on the weekend of 8/1-8/2. If we decide to make Newport as our Port #2, even though we're planning to arrive on the 3rd, the space can be very limited, as a lot of people might extend their stay. I tried calling Newport HBR Hotel and Marina, but got a voicemail. So, their availability is yet TBD.

Any thoughts and comments are encouraged.

Update on the Newport Harbor Hotel and Marina: http://www.newporthotel.com/newport-hotel-marina-boating/

They've confirmed that Jazz Festival is on the weekend of 7/31-8/2. However, they still have slips availability for the group. But, I can say that it won't last too long. So, if we don't want to miss it, let's start shifting our gears and start making commitments. The dockmaster told me that the phone is ringing and other groups are making reservations.

Do we want to make Newport the first port to be in town for the Jazz Festival? Is it worthwhile? I would presume that dockage costs, etc., would be greater as a result. Also, can we have the Feast at the Marina? Then the next question would be is Newport our middle port or the "End of the Trip" port? I can see pros and cons of each option, I just don't know what everyone else is thinking. Having Newport as the middle port would make my trip "easier" as I would come back to Block or Greenport and have a shorter run home. But I also like the idea of ending in Newport as the "highlight" of the trip. Thoughts anyone?

I answered one of my own questions: Dockage is $6 per foot for Jazz Festival. $5.25 other times.

Harold,

Besides higher premium, I think there's a minimum of 3 nights stay requirement.

IMO, it's an awesome experience to be part of the festival, IF you really into Jazz. Otherwise, if you have different agenda, majority of things will be more of a hassle rather than enjoyment, due to overcrowded places anywhere you go and anything you do. Jelena and I discussed this and decided that since we're not much of a Jazz people, then no reason having extra aggravation and expense.

Making Newport a last port is an option, of course. However, IMO, having it in a middle would be a nice diversification. Staying in WNH over the weekend, we'll do mostly water activities, beach and some games at the fields. If Newport is port #2, our activities will be geared more toward site seeing and exploring the area. In order to get in the water, you either use marina's pool or drive (need wheels, bikes/mopeds or dinghy) to get to the beach. Then if we head to Greenwich as port #3, we're back to mostly water activities, with option for some limited land activities.

Of course this is just personal approach and if logistically it works better for majority, it won't matter to me if it's first, mid or last port. I love it and will enjoy it regardless.

Having end of the flotilla feast in Newport would be awesome. I even have a spectacular spot in mind. However, based on my findings, the prices are just not reasonable. If we can have someone with local knowledge who could help us find a decent place for reasonable cost, then of course I'll be the first one to vote for it.

I have the following question to the group, staying 2 nights in each port opens some room for another port. Do you wish to consider adding a 4th port to the itinerary? I know that majority still need to get back home on Sunday. But, theoretically we have, if not two, but at least one extra night.

Below is just an example:

If we're adding a 4th port? How about making it somewhere in the middle like MYC centrally located? If we're spending big bucks might as well spend it all!!!!! Wahoooo

I was thinking either Montauk or Block. That way any of us from points west are making our way home.

That's exactly why I stopped the arrow right in the middle there, between them all. There's a nice junction in a 10-20NM radius. You have few options on CT side and of course Block and Montauk are great choices.

Are you trying to make my season short? B/c with this strategy it will be. :smt043

The arrow looks awfully close to Mystic, are you dropping a hint........:smt115

Block looks as if it would be a good midpoint to end the Flotilla. You have our vote for Block as a 4th if we go that route. As for the Jazz festival we don't look forward to the crowd either, especially with the kids.

Yeah......just not at Mystic. I've been there quite a bit, so I wouldn't mind skipping it this year.

I was thinking between Napatree Beach, Fishers Island (only if we have one night), Block or Montauk.

Block looks as if it would be a good midpoint to end the Flotilla. You have our vote for Block as a 4th if we go that route. As for the Jazz festival we don't look forward to the crowd either, especially with the kids.

I agree that Block is one of the ports that would be a great candidate for port #4.

I can throw couple more in the mix, which will only be in favor of LI group. Sag or 3 mile Harbor. It puts CT group out of the way, but straight shot from 3MH to Plum Gut is just under 10NM. Make a left and you're on you way home. I would vote for those ports as well.

Alex, I will cast P1 votes for East Greenwich, Newport, BI and Napatree. BTW We have moved the boat from Mystic, she is in Wickford RI for the winter and will be in East Greenwich RI for the summer (Our new home port). Unfortunately Shelter is out for us due to our small travel window that weekend. However there is a very good chance we will catch up at one of the other ports - they are all in our back yard, one in the front! - depending on the travel order.

do we have dates for Newport and is that a confirmed stop at this point? I'll call and reserve if so. We like slips, so if Block or Shelter, let me know if I have to call.
BTW, if you need a bigger boat, this is anchored off my hotel in PR right now. http://www.bizjournals.com/seattle/blog/2014/08/one-of-the-worlds-largest-private-yachts-the-super.html?s=image_gallery
That's funny I just walked past That last week on my way to Texas De Brazil. (A must dine) I dint like it. Looks like a sub. Big but ugly

After discussions with the Admiral, our preference for the 4th port is Montauk. If the group decides on Block, we will be ok with that.

We would be pleased with the current plan. I've always wanted to do the Newport and RI thing.
P1- WNH
P1-Newport
P1-East Greenwich
P1- Montaulk
P2- Block

I will book a slip(if needed)at Island Boatyard for the benefit of the group but I'll raft
in Newport, are the prices really $5.25 per foot, 3 nights? (Like $700.00 after taxes). I'd like to Marina but holy crap! I guess that would mean staying 3 nights or do we forfeit one for the 4th stop?
Don't know anything about East Greenwich, but sounds like a raft spot
Montaulk seems like a marina spot
Block raft

I guess we would prefer Montaulk over block since we've never been, but with no arm twisting we'd be ok with block. In fact if we go to block and the weather is good we may stay a little longer.
