CSR Northeast Flotilla 2014

Let's get few ideas going and maybe we can have the Flotilla go all the way to 1000 Islands, Quebec, Montreal for a two week trip in the summer of 2015. Oh boy, I'd love to see us do a trip like that.

Well, let's do another "practice" local run this year and then start doing some real cruising next season. Imagine 15-20 boats Flotilla heading to Canada? We'll need to get SR Corporate and SR Living magazine to cover the event.

Quebec, Montreal sounds awesome for 2015! I have not made a decision on this years trip. I am hoping to make part of it...possibly Shelter/Block!

Any thoughts about Woods Hole or Hadley Harbor as an overnight spot? No idea what each has offer when comparing to Coecles...more specifically, cedar island, but each spot is well protected and certainly scenic with some on shore dining or drinking(woods hole anyways). Also a short jump to MV from there if that were to be a destination.

How do you get there from your location?

One route....Hudson River heading north to Mohawk River to Erie Canal to Oneida lake to Oswego river to Lake Ontario.

We'd love to have you come along. Let me know when you're ready to sign up for this Flotilla. It'll be a perfect time to brainstorm as a group our trip to Canada in 2015.

Great spots, but they present few challenges. IMO, it's too distant just to have a feast there over the weekend and then go back to Block. If I was doing the feast in Woods Hole, then I would continue on to MV, Nantucket, and Elizabeth Islands. Hadley Harbor is very pretty, but there's no chance to have the feast there. Last time I was there (we pulled in after the sunset) I couldn't find a room just for myself and had to go on the outside anchorage, which is totally exposed to WNW.

However, this is my favorite area in the Northeast and I would love to have flotilla doing this route, anytime, any year.

Let's hear what others think about this.

Hey guys,

We just got a good "reality check" and this is the reason why these event have to planned way in advance. I just got a word from Taylor's Island that Aug 9th (or 2nd Saturday of August) is their annual fund raising event. So, they're unable to accommodate us that weekend.

I guess, it's back to the drawing board and now we need to find port #1 where we can have our feast.

I just added Essex to our list of choices. I spoke with Essex Island Marina and they said that they can handle a group pf 25 boats or so and have the place to hold our feast. They charge $4.5 p/f + tax, which includes electric, tables, chairs, grills. So, there's no extra renter or other fees.

Let's not get too comfortable and drag this for a while, b/c there are many people that reserve their events at this time. As you can see EIM has few groups and they told me on the phone that on Aug 9th they also have another small group, but they should fit us fine.

To sum it all up, we need to find port #1 (where to hold the feast) and port #2. Thereafter, we're heading to Block Island.

I've removed Taylor's Island from the list, so let's hear more thoughts and get your votes going.

Looks like we screwed the pooch on this one......That's it - I'm out - I'm going to Florida......where's that Bimini thread?

I charted it out roughly its 24 miles difference between shelter and Essex, (1:20 hrs ) for me. I don't think its a deal breaker for us (yet) .especially if the second port is not A long distance from there. I'm a little disappointed that its a marina not anchorage, it will be hard to beat the setting of Coecles Harbor .heres an idea, how about Essex>Block>Shelter ??

Joe,

Few words about Essex:

Essex is a very quaint little town with decent choice of restaurants and small shops. It has nice and cozy marina (EIM) with 1 min ferry ride, and about a mile up the river there’s a well known Hamburg Cove where we can take dinghies out for a ride anchor and hang out on the water. There are also some good scenery around Essex, if you wish to explore by dinghy. The marina has a pool and a big yard for the feast and other activities (last time I had soccer game with kids there). IMO, Essex is a very good candidate. Based on what I’m reading in some reviews, Hamburg Cove has a lot of moorings and with combination of anchorage area we shouldn’t have any problems.

As long us we stay flexible we have plenty of options. For example, the fact that Taylor's Island is not available it doesn't mean that we can't go to Coecles Harbor. It's just we should hold the feast some place else (say in port #2).

Just a thought.

Let's throw few other ideas out:

  1. Essex (feast) -> Mystic -> Block
  2. Essex (feast) -> Shelter -> Block
  3. Mystic (feast) -> Watch Hill, RI -> Block
  4. Coecles Hbr -> Essex (feast) -> Block
  5. Coecles Hbr -> Mystic (feast) -> Block
