CSR Northeast Flotilla 2014

I will review and add my vote in the matrix, but think that Cuttyhunk or MV is too far for My Dinghy........
Think Block or Newport would be the outer comfort zone.

Ron

I totally understand, Ron. Looking forward for your vote.

I'm up for block 100% as well. I meant to go in 2013 but didn't commit and wished I had. Also I can provide a plan B if you choose to go to Mystic. We could pile the dinghy's on my dock and use the house or there's also a yacht club very close to downtown that we maybe could use. I'll look into it if it looks possible as we get closer.

Sorry you didn't make it last year. We're looking forward to meet your crew this time. Your generous offer is greatly appreciated. If we'll end up in Mystic we might need your help when it comes to plan B and some logistics.

Please let me know the crew you would like me to add on the first page and that's what will partially used on the name tags.

Welcome to the Flotilla!

Ross, Yulia, Maya(6), Eva(3). Boat-RYME. We would be in the anchorage. I Have followed for awhile and look forward to meeting everyone.

I followed your trip last year and looks like you guys had a blast. We may try and join you for a port or two once dates and ports are established. Being from the cape, my vote would be Oak Bluffs for stop #2 and Block island for stop #3. Newport as stop #2 would work for me also. I think anything south of Block is out of the question for us as I only have a week off in the summer and a 3 & 6 year old on board so too long a run in a day makes the natives restless. I wouldn't make the feast unless it ended up someplace more north.
Oak bluffs is a great place as stated in a prior post. If planned well in advance there should be no problem getting slips reserved. Moorings are 3 wide and are $40 per mooring per night and are first come first serve but as stated in the previous post, that shouldn't be a problem on a weekday.

Ron,
I don't know if Newport will happen. As you may recall only Neil, myself & the Hudson contingent made it there last year. Although it was my favorite port on that trip, I'm not sure that the masses will make it there this time around. Maybe if it's not the last port you will have better odds.

Alex, Since I think I will be only able to attend the feast, I will limit my voting to that location. I vote Newport as P1. I think that's a great alternative to TI. There is a dinghy dock and for anyone without a dinghy and are staying at a marina, they can be shuttled by the ones with dinghys. The only negative is the cost may be prohibitive. My P2 would be Shelter Island.

Great! Thanks.....I'll update the first page.

Jeremy,

Thanks for your votes. Let's see how things will unfold and maybe the choice of ports will turn in your favor. From what I understand, if the feast will take place in port like Newport, it should work for you. So, it might make sense for you to make that vote. I'll place Block and OB for you, and if you'd like to add other vote, let me know.

Hey, have a little faith, Todd. ...LOL. As you see from my "observations" section on the first page, I'm trying to avoid similar situation and for this reason I'm suggesting to do Block as our last port. Thus, as long us the group has a mutual agreement on the other ports, we (at least majority) should be still together moving from starting port until we get to Block.

11. "Wetpaint": John and the crew, "Freedom" Fountaine Pajot 41, Anchorage Block Island, West Dennis, TBD

Thanks for corrections, John. I've updated the first page.

Thanks Steve, I know what you mean. It makes perfect sense.

Here's what we have so far, guys. Let me know if I missed anything.

Alex, good point. Put me in for a vote for newport for the feast.

Count me in for Block or Newport. Not sure if it will work out to do both, but I think I can do at least one.

Keep your votes coming, guys...

Only because I loved the setting for the feast last year !! Hard to beat it.

This why I think Taylor's Island (Coecles Harbor) is a perfect spot for event like this. It offers everything we need to start the flotilla. Just to summarize few bullet points:
- The location is great, it's within reasonable distance for folks in the Tri-state area.
- It's a great starting point for the Flotilla as it's not too far from home port of people in the Tri-state area.
- It's gorgeous and very sheltered harbor.
- The water is clean and much warmer since it's shallower.
- You have plenty of room to build a raft of any size.
- It allows having any kind of water activities.
- Night fishing is a lot of fun for kids.
- Taylor's Island has everything we need for the feast, including the house if the weather doesn't allow us to have the party outside.
- Access to the TI from the anchorage is convenient. Don’t forget that we have plenty of stuff to carry for the feast. So, good/quick access is essential.
- If you want more activities and night life, you can take couple of big boats and go to places like Greenport or Sag Harbor, which are only few miles away.

No kidding, it's hard to beat a place like this.

However, it doesn't necessary mean that now every Flotilla (including the feast) has to start there, and considering the fact that we have more people from Northeast interested in participating in the Flotilla (and/or just the Feast), it makes sense to explore other options. This is why we have Newport as an alternative (or a “competitor” vote wise).

Let’s do a quick comparison and see if it makes much sense. Here are my bullet points for Newport:

- The location: it is not that great as it’s much further away for folks in the Tri-state area, who’re committed to the event. For this reason I can’t say that it’s good starting point for the Flotilla, but it would probably be a great mid point (2[SUP]nd[/SUP] port).
- It's gorgeous and sheltered harbor. No question, it’s probably the biggest display of mega yachts of the Northeast.
- The water is colder and I don’t know if it’ll we could swim off the rafted boats or from a nearby beach.
- I don’t know if we’ll be allowed to build a large raft of 20-25 boats. I’m thinking not, since it’s very active and congested area. Need to find more on this.
- I’m not sure, but I don’t think that we can do water activities (tubing, knee-boarding, water skiing) in the anchorage area. Need to find more on this.
- Night fishing for kids off the raft should be fine.
- It looks like we can have similar accommodations for the feast, but the walking distance between dinghy dock and the place where we can have the feast might be long and hope that it’s not going to cost arm and a leg. Need to find more on this.
- All kinds of activities, including nightlife, are right there on the spot.

Lastly, by comparing the two ports with consideration of starting point for the Flotilla, as well as the port for holding the Feast, Newport presents a bit more open questions and some limitations (I wouldn’t want to miss a raft of 25 boats). Having said that, my personal opinion is that Taylor’s Island is better choice.

This is my opinion. Let’s hear what others think.

Here are the latest votes. Let me know if I missed anything.

Ok Ok - You've won me over Alex (combined with the fact that it looks like Mystic will be my HP this season) My P1 for the Feast is Taylor's and yes, P1 for block as the "last" stop. As far as the second stop is concerned, The marina in Norwich is like a diamond in a goats ass......its all that's there - its nice, but small, and the casino is the only attraction (shuttle Provided). Don't get me wrong, I think the casino's great, but my crew is able to visit it by car often. That combined with a long ride up an ugly river in the opposite direction of the next stop and I'm out. We'll probably do sag and/or Montauk and meet back upwith the group in Block if thats the way things go. As far as block is concerned, we need a far better spot this year even splitting up if we need to. Further in it is much more comfortable.

With regards to your Newport Questions, watersports would have to be off the west side of goat island and it can get choppy there. There is nowhere to build a raft - there is a small beach in brettons cove, but no place to safely swim off your boat.

Followed you guys last year and looked like a blast... I am considering joining you all this year but I'm not sure yet... We have a 1 year old who will be 1.5 by the time we go... don't know if maybe we should wait till next year when he is a bit older to join in all the fun... Don't want to be the party poopers..... What are your thoughts about bringing a toddler on this trip? He did great on the boat last summer but he wasn't mobile yet.....

I'm up to go wherever...

I guess after you guys set it all up we decide if were gonna jump on board... Maybe meet up for a leg of it...

- Andrew

Feast - Taylors

P1 - Shelter
P2 - Newport
P3 - Block

Any interest in an alternate route up the Hudson to Lake Champlain?
