CSR Northeast Flotilla 2013

Alex,
When are you arriving in Shelter Island?

I'm thinking around Thursday/Friday. I'll make sure to get there before you and you'll be able to raft to me.

BTW, at SI one of the activities for the kinds I'm thinking tubing and water skiing. I'm sure you and the kids don't care about that. Besides fast dinghies we might have jetski there as well......Sounds boring, I know.

I was talking to Colleen, she reminded me that it was difficult to find a mooring at Block on the weekend. When would we arrive in Block? Would it be better during the week?

This is why I thought that it might be a good idea to head there on Sunday. We spend Fri/Sat at SI and head to Block Sunday am. The usual routine. Worst case, as you've experience last year, we'll drop a hook and between several boats we'll keep an eye on open moorings. We'll have to ask everyone in the group to grab an orange mooring for us, so we can raftup like we did last year.

Hey Greg, tell Zack to get ready. Him and Danny will be water skiing and of course tubing. I'm getting special kids trainer skis. Should I bring big skis for adults?

I have a very stable tube that I will b bringing along with a wakeboard. What is the price diff between grabbing a mooring and getting a slip? I love my ac and will not run genny all night. Off topic but I just thought of a quick question how much fuel does a westerbek 5.kw genny burn under full load

Last night me and milena were talking. And we will be hosting a happy hour a day or two. We will ave appetizers cheese crackers orderves (how ever you spell it) and ofcoarse the blender beers and mixed drinks will be flowing.

X,

As with anything the price is varying and depends on the location for marina just like for mooring. In Block Champlins marina charges $5-$5.50 p/f (for your new boat we're looking at $180 per night) and mooring is $40. The beauty of mooring in places like Block is that the water in the harbor is very clean and we love to swim off the boat (that's why we don't care about the pool). They allow raft up to two boats (both boats pay the same amount). I don't remember 100% about Newport, but I think the prices are somewhat similar, marina $4-$5 p/f and mooring around $40-$50. The most I paid for mooring was $74 in Nantucket, but it is our favorite destination in the Northeast, so far.

Marina vs. mooring is a topic of its own. The main difference is that when you have a boat that gives you all the comforts of home all you need is just manage your FW usage.

The way we had it last year worked out perfect. We had about half of the group on a mooring and the other half in the marina. Everyone was part of every event on land or water. I'm sure that this is how we'll have it this year as well, at least in Block.

The bluffs

Generator - here's the specs on 5KW Kohler, I'm sure Westerbeek numbers are very close:

Load = GPH
100% = 0.75
75% = 0.69
50% = 0.61
25% = 0.54

My westerbeke 5.0 kw did burn .75 Gph on my 320. Hey how about a portable Honda genny strapped to the bow? But wrap it in plastic wrap in case it rains !!!!! Johnathan I don't run my gas gen set at night ,that's another advantage to a diesel boat!!!

And no you didn't hurt my feeling , we're all good!! Don't know why you would even ask?

Alex, since it may be difficult grabbing a mooring ball in Block during the the weekend would it be better to head to Newport after Shelter for Sat/Sun then maybe then cruise to Block for Monday ?

Portable genny seems very common these days, we see it in Block as the norm. Make sure you place it on the bow so the wind carries the CO throughout the whole boat, not just off the stern.

Seriously though, no question that low CO diesel add a huge comfort level, but there's no problem running genny on a gas boat as well. The key is to make sure that all equipment is in good working condition, no exhaust leaks and CO detectors are operational (make sure to have extra portable ones).

Joe, grabbing a mooring is a hit or miss thing. The green ones (for boats under 40') are not so much of an issue as there are good number of them there. The problem is with orange as they have only about 10 of them.

My plan for Block is always:
A - Grab first orange mooring.
B - If orange is not available grab a green mooring (no rafting will be allowed for me on the green).
C - IF the place is totally packed go to the anchorage area and drop a hook.
D - there's always Champlin to raft you up in the slip.

All options were exercised in the past and it worked out well.

As an example, last year the place was very busy and there were only one or two orange available. Steve got one, but by the time we arrived there were none. So, I scanned the field and found green ball. I took it until everyone settled in. The other half of the group went right to Champlins. Couple of boats didn't feel like circling around and went to Champlins as well. Greg arrived latest and couldn't find the orange ball (he's too big for green). So, he went to drop a hook for the first night. The next day we got the orange ball, so I took off from my green ball and Greg and I occupied that orange one together.

It's up to you guys, but I think we have plenty of options. Either way works for me.

Alex, I don't know anything about Block thats why it pays to ask questions to people that have been there. It sounds like we have a few plans looks like your the official cruise director :smt038 that's why we love you !!!

Todd, I was going with seniority but if Alex can't handle it ? Well he's out and the jobs yours.
Another question : if we're basically on the hook or mooring balls most of the time where would the table of the gods be held?

Haha, no, stick with Alex- he's the man and makes really cool spreadsheets!!

That is a good question though Joe. Since there is no MYC this year, where will you guys have your Table of the Gods? I'm assuming Champlins but, where? In the field between the hotel & pool? What about tables?

If I were going, it would be itinerary "E". I would probably leave Thursday am & head to West Hampton. I would then meet up at Shelter Island on Friday & commence from there. I would also probably head back to Greenport from Newport, if I was going that is.

Todd,

If you go, this may be an option for others too.. to start from West Hampton that is....

Great question, Joe.

Let me just tell you that based on how things were unfolding last year we (as a whole group) had every dinner together. It was all manageable as long as we made advanced reservations (only day in advance is fine for most places) but even if we called earlier on the same day we found places to dine as a group. So, this lead to two ideas (why bother with cooking, carrying extra food and getting it all setup, etc.):

1. Use catering.
2. Simply go to a dinner to places that can accommodate the whole group.

So, let's hear everyone opinions on this and let's make a decision on what we're doing. If we still wish to hold "the table of the gods", the "where" is not a problem. For example:

- Shelter Island: We can setup something on the beach, or better yet do it here (if we go to Coecles Harbor)

- In Block (like Todd mentioned) Champlins has the field with picnic tables which we can use.

There you go, getting from and to meeting port for the official flotilla could turn in to an event.

Ok so im just making sure I got this right. There is no making reservations? Its first come first serve for moorings and slips? So just about (for me in block) 170pn for slip 70pn for morring and free to drop anchor?
And im assuming you just pay on departure or arival.
Thos bluffs are way to low. That would be a big belly flop. Splat... so thats out
As for dinner im good with catering. The table of gods was amazing but a little pita.
Joe. I dunno why I just figured I crossed the line.

Also im gunna be new to running my boat. So as far as fuel goes I have 275g tanks (combined) would we be able to make a list of fuel stops and an est of dist between them?

One more and I promise im done. Does block get those nice cool breezes at night were I will be comfy not running the ac cuz im gunna be the cheepo here and say a free stay on the hook or save half and grab a ball sounds lovely to me. Anybody wana split a mooring?

Geeze all these plans and still no boat. What to do what to do

As for fuel stops , I'm planning on topping off at Shinnecock ,run to BI-Newport fill up again then to SI or Greenport -refuel then home. Alex I think table of the gods on an island is cool lets make it less (formal) like say:Dinghy wear and easy food that can be transported there by dinghy can we use a gas grill on these islands (magma) type?

Just Bring the 20 5 gal jerry cans left over from Sandy...........

X,

No worries, all questions are welcomed and encouraged. So, don't be shy and keep them coming as it only helps everyone to get good and detailed pic on how things will be unfolding.

1. Reservations: Mooring in Block is on the first come first served basis. However, marina will accept reservations. BTW, there's more than one marina, so if case if Champlins has no room (usually they try to accommodate everyone by rafting up the boats in slips) people can always try others like Panes. In Newport I have a contact and reservations are taken in advance, so I'll need to know the number of boats that prefer mooring and then I'll get in touch to see if we can have those reserved.

2. Paying for mooring in Block is done the following morning. The harbor master comes by to collect around 8-9am. In Newport I paid upon arrival.

3. When we'll shift focus on set in stone itinerary we'll discuss the routes in detail and we'll make sure that fuel stops will be included, so everyone has plenty in reserve.

4. It's entirely up to you to stay anchored, on mooring or marina. If you feel like saving $120 for 3 nights you can go to anchorage area, the only thing is that it's much further away from everyone else. The mooring field is right next to champlins. It's a 2-3 min ride by dinghy.

5. The beauty of Block is that during the season it's nice during the day and much cooler during the night. So for the most part A/C will not be needed.

6. Just to clarify on the mooring in Block, when two boats are rafted both boats pay the same $40 for the same mooring. So, rafted boats don't save any money, just having option to be stay closer together.

Alex I think table of the gods on an island is cool lets make it less (formal) like say:Dinghy wear and easy food that can be transported there by dinghy can we use a gas grill on these islands (magma) type?

Sounds good to me, it's actually an excellent spot with beautiful sunset. But, it's about 10-15min dinghy ride. So, if you guys up for it and wish to maintain the "table of the gods" tradition, then Friday Aug 2nd sounds like a good date to have it.
