CSR Northeast Flotilla 2013

Just need to get home on Sunday, so depending on where we run home from, Saturday or Sunday AM. Can even break it up and spend Sat night on FireIsland. Pretty flexible and go with the flow [or tide]. Would like to hit Greenport. heard its nice and never been there by boat. Riverhead - yuk.

Sounds dandy to me. As long as I'm home for Sunday as well. As long as we don't have to run the inside of the south shore from shinnecock to Freeport because of sea conditions. I did it once last year and its terrible. So slow and shallow. Well can't wait

Alright, now I see that the hangover has passed, ha X.....LOL. Good to see you back in the action. For a moment I thought you were deported to Aruba....LOL. Glad to have on board for the flotilla.

Jetski sounds like fun, just don't hit a whale on the way to Newport....JK...LOL. Seriously, it would be great to have a jetski or two, we just have work out the logistics on safe transportation. We're gonna have a lot of fun with those toys, I have some ideas.

Does anybody here dive? Is the water around block clear enough to dive in? Is there any interesting wrecks around any destinations? Is it worth it? Oh yea I almost forgot for all those who decide to join Alex has a little incentive in order to make the group as large as possible he has agreed to pay me by the foot for me to dive and bottom clean your boat. He's even paying me to clean my own bottom. He truly is a great guy. Thanks alex

Ha? Did you bump your head on the tampon again? What's up with that?.......I said I'm only paying for fuel and lobsters, the rest is on Gary......Oh, wait...there's nothing else left to pay for.

Water on block is very clean, but could be a bit chilly, so bring your 3-5mill suite. I don't know of any good wreck there.

A tip, if you use your boat no need to dive for bottom cleaning.

Dry suit baby. But if there's nothing to look at its not worth it. Don't tell me about using my boat tell tod and joe. Tod has "no time" and joe is to cheep. That's why he bought a dingy. How else did you think he was gunna do this trip. On his 36db? Ha.. My sincere apologies. Had to do it.

see you all miss me. I'm the spice that just makes everything that more interesting. And sometimes vile

1, I never missed you .
2, I am taking my boat.
3, I bought the dinghy so my dog can go ashore and crap on land! ( he can't go in the water ) but were working on it .

which brings up a question, is 8 days too much for a dog on a boat my size? I know we'll be at marinas but well be on the hook, we'll be in the ocean for some hrs, we've never taken for more than 1 -2 nites. Any experience pet owners with advice ? For the trip ?

Alex I forgot to put Dublin age 2 Kerry blue Terrier on my list of crew members please add him to the first page. Thanks .

I am glad your alive and kicking. Johnathan ( x)

Joe,

I think I saw somewhere that they make dog "pads" that look like grass and hold all the pee. May be worth looking into something like that just in case you're at sea too long or don't fire up the dingy in time in the am.

It's actually a nice run with good scenery. My only concern is the depth. Plan it on the high tide, know the buoys position ans you should be fine, of course providing that the bays are free from debris Sandy left behind.

1, I never missed you ...

Someone must have, b/c X keeps thinking that he's being missed.[/QUOTE]

Joe,

IMO, you should have no problems, especially when we're on the hook. We'll always be very close to shore and taking the dinghy to shore will solve your issue. The same on a mooring (unless you decide to take marina) in Block. I would worry more for bigger ports like Newport, but I'm sure you'll find a way to work it out.

Dublin is now officially on the first page along with the rest of the crew.

Joe I know you love me theres proof. Look at the pics from tods place. Now that was abig hug. Therefore I know you missed me.

Alex.
The scenery is very nice. I do agree. And yes the only thing that sucked was the low and skinny waterways. Other than that it was a very enjoyable trip. Just much rather jump in the ocean set the auto pilot ( can't wait to have on) sit back and watch the water run under the boat.

I know its far away and we havnt even decided on exact locations yet but do you have any marina names that you plan on staying at?

Water very clear but could be cold.
Lots of Wrecks in the general vicinity. The most popular is the U853. Think its in ~ 90 ft of water.....

I don't know about shore dive possibilities, but I've never seen a dive flag in the water near shore. There are boat charters which dive to sites just off the coast of Block Island like the U-853, Lightburne, Black Point, Idene, etc. For more info, you'd have to call a RI dive shop on the mainland.
You can call the local dive shop..

I am more of a vacation diver - warm clear water, but maybe......

Very interesting. Did you just research that? I might b interested in diving that. I love wrecks. If you ever get to key west you have to dive the vandenburg. Absolutely amazing. I dove the elevator shaft to 135 ft and drift all 900 so odd ft of the ship along the hull. Absolutly beautiful. A must. Well anyway if anybody is interested I will look more into it. I like warmer water to that's the only thing turning me away. But I wasnt kidding about the blob or base jumping. Ill pay and transport the blob I just cant find one. And how high are the blufs. Anything over 350ft is perfect I havnt based in a while and would love to put on a show and if there higher I would love to put the wind suit on.

Hey joe and tod I hope you didn't take any offense to my previous post. And if you did I do apologize there will be no more of that I promise. I have a blast hanging out with you guys and gives me a break from all the bs associated in my age group. So again I do apologize and really looking forward to the next one. Hope everybody enjoys there frigid weekend.

Jonathan,

Not at all bro. No harm, no foul! I have just been busy tryin to wrap up some home improvements & hosting a family birthday party for my oldest guy, Ryan, who turned 9 on Wednesday. I told him I was getting him a bunch of second hand hockey equipment but, that never happened! ;) (j/k)

That's good info, Ron. I'm like you a vacation diver and I don't do wrecks, don't hold wreck diver certificate either, just open water. I have no desire to dive in waters that's less than 80* warm with poor viz.

Good questions, this is the reason why it would be nice if we have more people sign up and submit their votes, so we can shift the focus on the details of each port.

Anyway, let's go with what we have and use the "Itinerary E", which so far was the favorable choice.

Itinerary “E”
1. Shelter Island (raftup), 1 night. - Regardless which harbor we choose we'll be anchored in a raft.
2. Cruise to Block island (anchorage or marina), 2 nights. - In Block most likely we'll have two groups. One group will take moorings and another will go to Champlins marina
3. Cruise to Newport (mooring or marina), 2 nights. - Might work similar as in Block. I prefer mooring but most folks might prefer marina (Mike said he can assist)
4. Splitting in to two Groups: to Greenport/Riverhead (1 night) for those wishing to head back west or Eastbound (...to Martha's Vinyard, Nantucket, etc...). - If we're heading to Greenport I would suggest Townsend marina. Cozy place with short walk to town.

Any comments and suggestions are always welcome.

If I were going, it would be itinerary "E". I would probably leave Thursday am & head to West Hampton. I would then meet up at Shelter Island on Friday & commence from there. I would also probably head back to Greenport from Newport, if I was going that is.

That my friend sounds like a candidate for a "Strong Maybe" with some tweaking to do in order to transition in to "We're going".....:smt001

On that note, shall we add a "Possibly Going" list with you taking the first place there?

BTW, I like your plan and it's very comfortable and doable. I'll be waiting for you guys at SI.
