CSR cruise to the bahamas?

That's weird that Chad's post entered itself 3 times.

Chad - good luck with your continuing engine work. I hope it all goes back together well. Did you speak to someone local about the Waterway? I sent an email to someone on GB but have not received a reply. I would love to go to DBC if we could figure it out.

Barry - how's your boat running? Are you going to move your boat on Thursday evening to get a decent start of Friday like Chad suggested? Is that other couple coming with you?

Randy

Just got back last night from NY where it was 57 and raining when I left...

Not a bad idea to move my boat Thurs night..Still waiting to see what is going to happen with the admiral as I know she can't get out of work again (she went with me to NY).

As of now my friends have made reservations too..They just bought a 30' Rinker and are excited about the trip. We will have to keep an eye on the weather a few days before to make sure nothing is lurking out there...

Since I've never crossed I definitely will follow Chad across. Just give me some waypoints to plug in and I'll be good to go. As for the side trips..I have no extra props so anything less than 3.5' I'd stay away from..

Stuff

My multiple posts were due to getting a failed to post errors with a debug message and I'd back arrow and try again. It is was posting, and the error was in the report that the post was complete. <head> get it?

I buy a crusie pack of Explorer charts for the Northern Bahamas every publication date. They are essdtentially the same charts used in C-Map chips for the Bahamas.

I'm a paper chart guy too .... The electronic are great don't get me wrong, but I have to keep a running track on paper ... just in case.

Barry, we need to make some plans for the ladies ... fly over to freeport on Friday evening?

Barry, you only need one way point for Freeport, from the Pt Everglades Sea Bouy you steer 74 deg. true 81 deg Mag {inc var.}, 77.5 NM run time at 20 KNts 3hr 50 Min. tied up 4hr 20 minutes.

Depart PE @ 7:00Am ETA at Port Lucaya Marina 11:20AM

More details

Clearing in the Bahamas:

You will need a copy of the ships documentation or State Registration.

A passport for each person entering by boat.

$300.00 in currency for Crusing/Fishing permit fee (non negociable), Barry yours might be afew dollars less due to length.

If you are bringing pets you will need medical pet papers from your VET to bring the pet into the Bahamas, they are quite serious about this formality.

A Yellow "Q" (quarantine) flag to be flown on the STB spreader or mast upon entering Bahamian waters if you are requesting Pratique (entry) and a Bahamian flag to be flown on the STB spreader/mast after entry is granted.

The paper work can be completed in advance, but each crew member must accompany the skipper to immigration, but are not allowed to accompany the skipper to entry/customs ( go figure)

All customs and immigration required in the Bahamas can be conducted right at the marina at Port Lucaya Marina.

Before leaving the US the Homeland Security troops have a "Local Boater" program which allows skipper and crew to present themselves at the Homeland Security immigration office and Pre Clear their return to the US. When this is done, the skipper and crew may proceed directly to their dock and call in their re entry for each person ... and thats it. No reporting at odd hours or long waits for a tired crew. This is the Bomb!

Excellent points Chad. Customs in PL will be swamped!

The pass for the pets can take a couple weeks so if you haven't applied yet, you probably won't get it in time.

The lower entry fee ($150.00) is for boats 35 feet long or less so Barry will save some $$$$.

Don't forget passports for everyone!!!!!

The flags can be purchased at BOW or WM.

Last time we checked into US Homeland Security, we filled out a form that allows us to check in by phone when we return and not have to drive to Port Everglades in person. Now that is the bomb!!!

I just received this email from a friend who lives on Grand Bahama Island. Her husband is a professional captain.

Hey Randy,

I have Capt. Les in front of me.

He says that the beginning of Dover Sound (at the end of the waterway going North) is shallow but it certainly can be done at high tide with your boat (4 foot draft).

When you go through the poles at Dover Sound do it at idle speed and at high tide. He says stay dead center between those poles. He doesn't recommend that you make a turn until you get a reasonable distance (1/4 mile) before you make the Easterly turn..he says just read the bottom and you'll see what he's talking about.

The Lucayan Waterway itself is fine..it's just that one area.

Once you're in the Waterway, get on Channel 16 and announce that you're travelling through from the south to the north or the north to the south. Reason is that there is a spot called "The Narrows" where two large boats just can't pass one another. You want to be aware if there are any other boats in that area before you get there.

My husband's boat draws 3 1/2 and even full of fuel and guests he can get through fine as long as he's careful...he doesn't think you'll have a problem as long as you follow his instructions.

T minus 5 days and counting.

A couple of items to share.....

NOAA calls for seas to be 2 feet or less through Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed.
Extended weather outlook in the Atlantic is quiet.
Our boat will have my family of 3 and 2 guests.
We have another boat with 2 couples joining us but they will be staying in another resort.

more later.

Got back from NY with Strep Throat... on Z-Pack and hope that knocks it out quickly...Will have to see how things progress by Wednesday and hope for the best!! Have friends in their 30 Rinker coming, not sure if they are bringing anyone or any kids.

More during the week...

Barry

Engine service

Completed the major re install yesterday ... even fired up the engines for leak testing ...

Ahgggg! Oil leaks in the marine gear cooler hose fittings ... had to do minor tear outs and reseal threads on near impossible access elbow fittings. A three dollar tube of goop keep this tub running!

Yikees!

So is everything OK?

SOKAY

I don't know if the thread sealer actually worked as yet. I have sea trial her, but I'm confident that it will be fine . I've let the sealer cure over night and will fire up the engines today to see if we leak w/o load.

Then I need to sea trial the whole rig. I'm planning on a shake down Monday.

Progress!

Warmed up the ponies this afternoon and brought the enmgines yup to operating temp. NO LEAKS in the oil fittings!

Tomorrow a sea trial .... the real deal ...

Then a diver to clean the bottom, fuel up and add some Fritos & Salsa and I'm outta here!

Barry - how ya feeling today? Better I hope.

Guys - How about a cocktail party on Saturday night? I think we have 15 people in our group.

Randy

Throat is still pretty bad...one more day of antibiotic and if it's not a lot better by Wednesday will have to go back to the Dr's and probably cancel the trip :smt089

Will keep in touch and keep my fingers crossed..I've been so looking forward to this!

While I can't go on your trip, but would love to come with ya'll, maybe I can provide some advice on Strep.

You have not given that Zpak enough time to work be patient. You still have time to get better and by the weekend should be feeling a whole lot better. About 3 to 4 days after you started the Zpak you should see a marked increase in how you feel and by the weekend should be doing well. Good luck.
