Sorry to start all the new threads around here! Seemed like it needed a little life though ;)

Need a little help diagnosing a problem i encountered. I recently purchased an 87' 340 sundancer with 454 crusaders. All in all they run pretty well. But i noticed after the engines have been running a while, and are good and hot, the starboard engine will cut out on me. No sputtering, no coughing, just shut off like a light switch. I can immediately restart it and it will run another minute or so and then shut off again. Then after it cools down, it won't do it again for a while.

I don't think this is fuel related. I've been thinking maybe a coil or something along those lines?

Thanks!

Coil sounds like a good place to start, I would also check the condenser in the distributor cap. They are also known to get hot and shut down.

This X2. Condensers are often overlooked. Seen it 2 times this year.

Sounds like a broken wire or connector. Hard to find but easy to diagnose. When it dies next time, jump 12 volts to the positive connection on the coil and see if it restarts and runs without an issue. Alternatively, hook up a voltmeter to the positive connection on the coil and see if it loses voltage when it shuts down.

I had a client's boat at the beginning of this season with the exact same issue and it turned out the engine harness had corroded and the purple wire had intermittent voltage.

what playdate said-- I have seen three crusader owners go bonkers and find out this connector was the problem.
