Hello,

Just wondering why some marinas run credit check to rent a boat slips. What are they looking for?

Thanks

likely a soft hit like insurance companies or apartment rentals use.....people with bad credit are more likely to do bad or desprate things like not pay, steal, sue, commit fraud, etc......never heard of a marina doing this, but with places full i guess they can be more selective......I wouldnt let a marina check my credit - id move on - fuck them - what will they ask for next, vax card, a blood test? where does it end?

Mandi,
I believe most of the marinas in So Cal require a credit check for the reasons mentioned. Another possible explanation is the process to evict a boat for failure to pay on the lease is quite lengthy. I haven't seen this yet at Cabrillo Way, but down in Newport Beach there are several boats that were moored in the harbor that have been seized by the city. They have signs posted on them that it is unlawful to board them etc. I heard that if the owner fails to pay and the court proceedings are complete, the boat will be auctioned off to pay the fees or hauled out to be scrapped.

Marinas also don't want to be stuck with derelict boats. I suspect that is more likely to happen when a boat owner has poor or no credit.

I would absolutely run a credit check for a lease. I wouldn't want anyone leasing my slips without excellent credit! If you've got something to hide then move on!

Thanks for the great info all:)

I pay up front for the season, so no monthly charge here. Perhaps that's a hedge.

But even then, my marina has a couple of boats sitting there because the owners abandoned them on the property. One is a boat my brother-in-law sold a guy. He was a little squirrely, and ended up just disappearing and left the boat on the mooring. The boat was hauled after the summer and started to accrue yard storage fees. In NY I think it's kinda hard for a yard to seize the boat, sell it, and recover costs. 10 years later that 22 ft Four Winns is still just sitting there, ruined and rotting away. Even after 1 winter not being cared for it was probably severely damaged and not worth much.

It might be the case that running a credit check could have avoided this burden being put on the marina owner.

Most of us pay up front here in AC because Farley Marina gives a 10% discount if paid in full early. They do require a credit card on file but I've never heard of a marina asking for a credit check.

My marina is happy to rent slip to anyone with…
1. Boat dont look like it about to sink.
2. Has full set of teeth.
3. Can leave the marina not hitch hiking.
4. Dont pee off the swim platform.
Kidding. My slip neighbors are the most salt of the earth down to earth help you out boaters i have the pleasure of being with.
