Craziest thing that's ever happened on your boat?

A few years ago, we were rafted, on the hook, in a bay that has a nice solid rock almost dead centre of the entrance (to the right of the pinned “A”) here…

It was happy hour on my bridge and we noticed a 40 something Taiwan trawler chugging in at maybe 2 or 3 knots, directly in line with the rock. Charted as “awash at chart datum,” we guessed to be about 3’ below the surface right then. As we waved frantically for them to stop, alter course or otherwise pay attention, we could hear a female voice over the stereo squeaking; “those folks are waving at us, do we know them?” Just as I told buddy to jump in the tender and I let go on the hailer, the bow of the trawler bounce, bounce, bounced up, listed to port, rocked upright and slid back, like panties offa handrail.

Before we could respond any further, she did a pirouette and retreated back down the track she came in on. A monitoring of the VHF over the next hour told us nothing of her fate. Lucky people, who I hope took up camping after that.

We were at the beach and decided to pull anchor to go get something to eat.

Something was on the anchor so I went up on deck to see what it was.

It was.. BVD's undies with a beer-fart that went terribly wrong. :wow:

I had an old 16' Glastron Tri Hull. My now 10 year old son was under 1 year old then. He would scream if we were on the boat and not moving. I had to be moving and quick for him to calm down and fall asleep. Once asleep, we would stop. He would wake up and cry.
The day was like this. Put boat in water, go like hell, take boat out of water, get gas.
Oh, he is still Mr. Hammer Down.

Interesting that most of these Crazy Moments are self-induced....and I too shall contribute.

When I previously owned the Cobalt I just recently re-purchased I had it on the trailer in front of the house doing a bunch of different projects. The fuel tank on this boat sits above the deck, across the stern and the rear bench is attached to brackets that are part of the tank. Well I needed to drill some new holes in the brackets for a decorative panel that had come unattached.

Long story short I didn't measure twice and drilled a 1/4" hole in the side of a 52 gallon tank full of fuel. I tried everything to plug the hole but ended up calling the Fire Dept. and asked if they could come by quietly and stop the leak before things got out of hand. Well they showed up with every siren screaming and every light ablaze which brought out everyone for 10 blocks to see the idiot that drilled a hole in his fuel tank.

This is what happens when you try to jump from one bunk to the other and miss only to hit the license plate bracket and bolt. There are 1/4 inch bolt thread marks engraved in the shin bone. Only took 36 stitches to repair. Like NorCal, it happened at the landing so the town tried out every piece of fire and ambulance equipment they had.
BTW the bunks were submerged so my angle of approach from one bunk to the other was off.

Would have to say there has been more crazy times on my boat that I can remember but I would say the one that sticks out (and can be shared on the internet here LOL) would be about 7 years ago it was a about mid April and the boat just went in for the season, I had just started dating my now wife and was excited to share the boating lifestyle with her as she had never been into boating or even on a boat for that matter, there were spotty storms in the forecast so we planed to head to the marina and just hang out on the boat with friends and family (My parents, brothers, and about 4 friends boats were all in the same set of docks) as we sat through the first storm it wasn't to bad and rolled through pretty quickly and all cleared up and looked great, we checked the radar and all seemed ok for about 5hrs or so we decided to take my boat (27 Sundancer) and my brothers boat (29 Formula PC) out to Gull Island (about 13 miles) to hang out for a bit, trip out there was perfect my girlfriend and her 2 year old daughter loved the ride we all hung out on the island for about 1/2 hr and I start to notice the clouds toward the marina aren't looking so good so we decide it is time to go, we pack up put up what some of the tops and off we go, as we leave the island I pass the shallows and go to put the drive down and of coarse the trim pump is locked up and the drive wont move, at this point we are about 1500ft off the island already in open water and all hell breaks loose with the storm, my brothers boat was about 50ft off my stern and with in less than a min it went from calm and clear to me not being able to see his boat and 6-7ft waves, now I am on my boat with my self, my dad and my girlfriend and her daughter with the look or absolute terror in their eyes, I send the girls into the aft cabin and tell them we are fine I have my dad in the engine bay trying to get any movement at all out of the drive and I am desperately trying to at least keep the boat straight and into the waves, not getting any movement on the drive, getting blow off coarse by almost 4 miles and literally idling out way back to port through the storm the entire time as we enter the marine it starts to clear up a bit and we pull into the slip, I get to go down into the cabin and find my girl friend in almost tears her 2 year old daughter is rubbing her arm and telling her we will be ok and she looks at me like I have to be some kind of moron for thinking this boating thing is fun. After all is said and done we found out it was one of the worst storms to roll through the area in some years with 70mph winds 7-9ft waves and dropped more than 2 inches of rain in under 1hr but the boat handled ever min of the storm with out a problem and amazingly my girlfriend actually went back on the boat that summer, she is now my wife and we have been caught in countless other storms that she doesn't even flinch at.

One of the funnier stories that comes to mind is from my single days many years ago. A couple of buddies and I rounded up a group of single girls for a late night boat ride. Our one friend, who was a NYPD helicopter pilot, had to work so he couldn't join us. We all meet at the boat, spend a little time on introductions and making sure everyone is comfortable heading out onto the water, and eventually shove off. My "go to" late night anchorage is only about a mile away and we head out at a slow bell. The guests are all getting along and loosening up with each other by the time we arrive and drop anchor. Its looking like a good night. Sometime later, while the guests are now quite comfortable, thanks to the libations, the music is pumping, and everyone is dancing around...out of nowhere, a helicopter swoops out of the sky...hovers at best, 10 feet above the boat...spotlights like the sun itself burning down on us...propwash blowing anything out of the boat that's not nailed down. Its my buddy, of course, who couldn't make it but the girls didn't know that. He gets on the PA and starts yelling about hands up and violation of this and that. The reactions were priceless. Finally he pulls off of us, loops around and does a low fly over and he's gone. We stayed there for another hour, cleaned up everything that had been blown around, and eventually headed home. I don't think those girls will ever forget that night.
