I think he should of got life.

ROME, Feb 11 (Reuters) - An Italian court convicted the former captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner on Wednesday for his role in the 2012 shipwreck that killed 32 people and sentenced him to 16 years in prison.

The public prosecutor actually asked for a 26 year conviction, describing him as an "incautious idiot"

Just saw the video again of them "parbuckling" the ship again. Yea, give him Life!!

How much blame does the company take that owns the ship and hired the IDIOT?

I would think it is thier duty to be sure of that before handing him the command.I am sure thier insurance paid them for the ship, what about the families of the deceased,16 yrs in jail for the captain wont make them forget the tragedy. Its no replacement for thier loss.

Many countries don't have the strict licensing programs for officers like the US does. There is a reason many large vessels are registered in places like Liberia and Panama, because crew costs are less. You get what you pay for.

unfortunately Captain Hazelwood proced this wrong with the Exxon Valdez many years ago. alcohol and super tankers are not a good mixture.

i was very surprised to hear about this incident because most European countries do have goof officers and crews, at least in the 80's when I was is on ships. Perhaps others can educate me on that who are still sailing.

This Captain should have gone down with his ship.

Lock him up and throw away the key. Every life that was lost is on him. Talk to one of the family members of those lost and see how they feel.

What a polite gentleman.......think even I would have called it stronger than that:) Should throw away the key! Being a Captain of a ship, airplane or whatever is an awesome responsibilty and should be treated as such. Remunerated well and chastized just as well when things go wrong.

The Italian justice system is a joke and an embarrassment

...sadly, you are not far from truth. We do have some good exception though.

Also Costa/Carnival was sentenced to refund every passenger aboard, but not for giving the captain a skipper who could not speak good english or italian!!!

Pietro,

I've always thought that Italian trials were 6 parts jurisprudence and four parts theater.

As for finding fault with "the company", that may prove to be difficult. Today commercial ships are not owned by the carriers that use them, but by owners who invest the money in the purchase of the ship. Sort of along the lines of a landlord of a large office building. The ship owners engage companies known as ship managers to manage the maintenance and repair, charter marketing/sales and operation of the vessels. That often includes providing crewing for the ship. Individual crew members are also quite often hired as independent contractors.

The management company maintains the interface with the charter party. For example it is not uncommon for a container line to charter a ship, have the ship renamed to one of their fleet names, and painted with the company's livery. However the carrier would have absolutely no direct communication with the vessel or its crew. They would tell the management company the ship has to go to a certain port by a certain day and discharge/load so many containers and then go someplace else.

As you might guess this system would tend to isolate nearly everybody in the event of a disaster. That is by intent. I don't know how cruise ships are managed, but it wouldn't surprise me that it is very similar, although I would guess the hospitality staff were employees of the cruise line and the ship's operational crew were probably provided by the ship's manager.

If my math is right, Thats only a 1/2 year in prison per life, Thats just wrong!!

Good answer Henry Boyd,i guess i can see why they only refunded the ticket price, they seperate themselves from liability which is good for them ,not so good for the passengers.I wonder how many people would just fly to thier destinations if they knew that?

When you think about it refunding the ticket price, or even doing that plus a free future ticket is cheap PR/customer relations. Think about it, you've just been on a cruise and the ship sank because the Captain was incompetent. Boy, I'd just run right out an book a do over trip.

In any event, they probably had to refund the ticket price. Even cruise ship trips are transportation transactions; the cruise line agrees to take you from point A to point B for a fee. If you don't get to point B, the cruise line has failed in their contractual duties and they owe you a refund. The amount of the refund could be pro rated, but only refunding 40% because the ship already went 60% of the trip (as an example) would be a PR disaster.
