Corrosion Reference Electrode

I have been doing much research and have learned a great deal since my first boat purchase in November. First is to always have a boat surveyed. Not saying that I made a bad purchase but I would have learned a great deal being a new boater.

My outdrive have a small amount of corrosion around the housing by the prop. Since discovering this I have done a ton of research and understand why this takes place. Part of the reason for the corrosion happening was a faulty active anode (mercathode). That has been detected, fixed and all new anodes will added.

I’m considering the purchase of a Corrosion Reference Electrode. It seems to be a cheap investment. Is this something that the common boater has in there tool box?

As the owner of an early 2000's BIII, the battle with galvanic corrosion is ever present, and an ongoing project. I purchased a Reference Electrode the first year we had the boat to help evaluate just what was, and was not working with our Anti-Corrosion system/s in general.
I have found it to be a very valuable tool. Even with our corrosion issues basically in check at this point I still find myself using it several times a season just to make sure that all systems are go. Especially when a new slip neighbor moves into the area to make sure that their boat is not leaking stray current that might start eating up our drive.
If you are a BIII owner, it is a great preventive maintenance tool to own.

Jim,

Thanks for your response... I spoke with BoatZics.com yesterday. Very helpful and very nice. They have them on sale for $98. I'm going to order my anodes as well. Shipping is free over $100.

Are they pretty straight forward to use?

They are a great company! (BoatZincs)
As a alluded to in my first post we had MAJOR corrosion problems going on with our 240 when we first got the boat. BoatZincs provided some very useful counseling in helping narrow the issues down and get it resolved. They provided the reference electrode, and the knowhow to make it a useful tool.
As a result, guess what, they get my replacement anode business every year.
Once you receive the electrode, if you have any utilization questions that are not clear with the instructions, shoot me a PM and I will try to fill in the blanks.

Cheers,

Jim
