Wondering if any one paints their below water metal parts with bottom paint that has copper. Aluminum trim tabs? Steel rudders? Bronze props? Stainless shafts? The previous owner had everything painted but I hear different metals react differently with bottom paint. Thanks for any info

I prop speed the running gear and use copper paint on the bottom.

I have been a big fan of prop speed over the years.

Was at the boat yard a week or so talking with them about some upcoming maintenance which requires a haul out. They were telling about a new product which they say is next generation beyond prop speed.

Sorry I forgot the name of it, will post it when I find out. I may try it on running gear.

My bottom paint is still good, but the running gear needs help. That's been my problem with prop speed, it wears off too quick. Have heard it said that the water in the ICW around our area carries a lot of sand and that's what wears the prop speed.

That’s interesting, yes please let me know when you get the name of that product. Thanks

Please post back with the name if possible, would be very interested in that.

We are trying something new this year by Petit. This went on our Hydraulic lift components. We use the Petit Hydro Coat ECR on the tabs and hull. We get two to three years in Fresh Water.

Ive used zinc galvanized paint on running gear with pretty good results for several years. Trying an experiment this year though.....just had my newly tuned props ceramic coated....stay tuned!

I too used to use the zinc galvanized paint (pettit) but it wore off so quickly. When pulled for mid summer bottom cleaning it was mostly gone, I would say 35-40hrs of run time? My season is usually ~80+ hrs.

I checked with the boat yard, product they were discussing is called Prop Coat.

No personal experience. The yards experience has come from diver feedback in the area over the past almost 2 years.

I may try it when I come out of the water in early June.

Thanks for posting back. That is actually older then PropSpeed, PropCoat has been around for over a decade Pettit marine makes it. They also have it in a spray can as well as brush on. But it's basically a galvanized grey paint.

PropSpeed is a two layer process, a barrier coat, gold in color and a seal coat, clear.

Thank you, I know nothing about it.

I commented to the boat yard that I thought my bottom paint was good for while but lots of stuff on the running gear. Evidently my boat yard just discovered this stuff after its been on the market for 10 years.
