Cool Fuel System Module Leak..

The cool fuel system on the starboard 8.1 L Horizon is leaking from the housing. Mechanic states corrision is the culprit.

Question, this is a Generation one cool fuel system and I am told the housing can not be replaced, that this only applies to Generation 2 or 3. Anyone know anything about this? about a 600.00 difference in part cost between housing versus the entire module.

There is are lots of discussions about the Mercruiser fuel coolers especially the GEN III which seems to have two problems due to its inadequate design made of ally the cooling water which can be salt water salts up and leaks can eventually cause water in the fuel. the other problem is the fact that Mercruiser apparently painted some of the internal parts of the cooler which gets affected by the Ethanol in the fuel causing it to flake and be eaten away blocking the fuel pressure regulator valve causing high pressure at the injectors resulting very rich running thus poor performance, sluggish i.e. not getting out the hole as it used to and poor top end and eventually hig cost damage. See threads "Gen III fuel Module Issues" and "Heads Up--Mercruiser Fuel Cooler Corrosion Issues" it apparently goes back to between 2004-2005 for approximate 3 years, however engines are produced but not necessary used in anger on a craft for some time. They are worth reading if you have Mercruiser engine built around that time could save you thousands. I have the high pressure problem that my mechanic has been trying to resolve with 5 visits approximate 10-12 hours different parts fitted, with no success, new plugs were well carbonised within 5 minutes and soot coming out the exhaust, now i am told i need a new cooler at £800 (over here its pounds for dollars) or $800 in USA, i cant see that my self so I am awaiting the arrival of a new regulator from the states not in stock over here.
