Hello all,

Green newbe here. Just acquired a 1988 230 Weekender. The seller told me he removed the inverter (it "went bad") and pointed to an area where 110V and 12V wires lay taped up on the right side of the bilge. After looking at the parts breakdown on Sea Ray's site I now suspect that he actually removed the converter (I'll have to double check once I can get shore power on it), and that it didn't have an inverter. If this is right, what converter can one get to replace the original? Is there a direct fit or will I need to retrofit one? What amperage, etc.? It has two batteries with a switch.
Many thanks!
John

John,

I am pretty sure that your boat did not come with an "inverter" but as you correctly guessed the previous owner was referring to the "converter" which is an on board battery charger that converts 110v AC to 12v DC to charge your batteries. The original from your boat was most likely made by a company called Charles and you can find a direct replacement on this site under Marine Electronics/Chargers/Charles. I replaced the original model in my 1991 270 with a True Charge 20 model by I believe Xantrex and it worked great. I liked it's ability to add a remote panel to check the status of the unit. It was a very easy install.
