Connecticut – Points of Interest

Can anyone comment on Steam Train ride in Essex, is it fun or a boring ride that just sounds good?

First off you'll need a cab to get to the train yard if you're staying at Essex Island marina. Then it depends on what trip you take, if I remember right you can opt for the train only or get the combo train-boat ride up river to the opera house. Schedule the entire afternoon if you go for the combo as I believe the round trip was approx 3-4 hours. It was pretty hot when we went so it was a bit uncomfortable. Remember these are antique trains with no air conditioning and seats with little or no padding so the ride can get interesting...

I'm trying to find few good places to drop a hook or stay on a mooring in the Stamford or Norwalk CT surrounding areas. I've been at Cockenoe Island and heard good things about the Zieglers Cove. Based on my preliminary research the Scotts Cove looks pretty shallow. I was reading about Greenwich having mooring balls. Is the Greenwich harbor nice and worth going there by boat for a night or two?

Can you guys suggest more gunkholes and cool harbors and/or towns to see in the area?

I'll be up in Essex and Sag Harbor next week... Looking for that guy in the Sea Ray that picks his nose...

I hope you're dropping a hook at Sag. Otherwise, the crazy prices you payed for a slip at Nantucket will look like a bargain.

Are you calling me cheap? This is the place that will make you fill your 480 shrunk to a 420 ...LOL

Ok...ok..I make the grammar error ...will make you feel your 480 shrunk to a 420

BTW, who said I'm out? We like Sag a lot.

Gary,

I'll be hitting Sag and Essex in August. So take good notes. I was thinking of anchoring in Sag Harbor Cove.

Alex,

The Essex Steam train also has a Murder Mystery Dinner thing. Sounds like fun, but they don't recommend it for kids. I called and they said there is some bad language, but not terrible. I'm still considering it.

We went to Greenwich last year. It was nice, bunch of shops, etc. not sure about two days though. One was enough for me. I did see moorings, but we docked at a yacht club. They took my credit card info, but never charged me.

I assume you've seen the following:

Not in CT, but if you want something for the kids for a day, Rye Playland is pretty neat.

Pier Restaurant and Tiki Bar has free moorings, and a launch (not sure if that is free, we took the dink)

We got there in the morning (they don't open till 10 or 11), took a free mooring, spent the day at Playland, had dinner at Pier, then stayed the night. It was a good day, a bit rough at night, the wind blew the waves right through the opening in the breakwater.

Four Suns, I'm pickin' right now...keep those photos' of strangers to yourself this time....maybe I'll see you out there though.

Greg,

Thanks for the links. I totally forgot about the Rye Playland. I'll definitely keep it on the radar to visit with kinds.

zieglers or however you spell it, is a great spot to anchor or borrow a mooring ball (during the week). on the weekends it's packed and whom ever owns the ball will show up. Not a lot of spots to anchor on the weekend. Forget scotts, too shallow. Going into Greenwich, if you go right into the bay with all of the mooring balls, not the marina area, we anchored there a lot over the years. Then they filled it up with mooring balls so no place to anchor. But during the week it's pretty easy to borrow one. Both are great places to dinghy around. Cockenoe is a great place to anchor but tricky to get into. Do it at high tide and follow a big boat in, approach it from the west side of the island. it gets crowded during the weekends. there's other places to drop the anchor in the islands depending on what day you are doing it. We tend to anchor on the north shore of LI at port jeff, north port, oyster bay ect... during the weekends.

Mike, don't know if I mentioned it but I know someone (go ahead guess!) with the perfect mooring in Zieglers..... As of this Sunday it will have "Miss Melina's" name on it! Rated for a 55' ft boat with it's 1000lb mushroom.

And this one for Greenwich:
