I really don't have a dog in this fight as I live and thrive in Ca. We have our share of folks that occasionally display their Confederate flags on their boat or on their lifted pick ups. I often wonder if they are flying it purely to demonstrate their pride in the region that they came from or are they truly racists and proud to announce it. I see the removal of Civil war era statues and the banning of the confederate flag as pure virtue signaling by the guilt ridden and embarrassed law makers. I see both sides of the argument, if the symbols of the southern resistance to the abolishment of slavery in the US are removed from public view, that can be seen as progress to closure for those that can't get past what was in the past. On the other hand the symbols are a reminder of the unpleasant and unjust history and serve as incentive to continue moving forward on the equity front. If History is forgotten are we not doomed to repeat it? Unfortunately there will always be unhappy people that need to blame someone else for their plight . There will be those that use these symbols as tools to do just that. I don't think banning the flags from Nascar or military bases will actually fix anything but rather just make current leaders feel good about doing anything for the sake of doing something.

So I see that Nancy Pelosi has proposed the removal of all confederate era statues from DC. Maybe what we should do is collect all of them and establish a Smithsonian institute of the American Slavery story. It would be like the holocaust museum. There to educate people about the truth of slavery and the efforts to abolish it. All of these statues would be displayed and organized according to where these personalities made history. This way future generations of Americans can visit and learn about them but the people who these symbols offend wouldn't have to endure their presence in the towns and cities in which they live.

I would be fine with this. However it is my belief the Democrats want these statues and flags destroyed because it highlights their parties history.

So, seeing as Democrats want to destroy any reminders or symbols of slavery, which their party fought to the death for - why is there still a Democrat party? That party "alone" represents the US history of slavery, segregation, Jim Crow, KKK, lynchings, ghettos, anti-civil rights, as well as internment camps.

Generally, you are pretty safe doing the opposite of whatever Pelosi recommends.

The confederate flag that is most commonly seen was not the flag of the confederacy but was instead a battle flag. It was however incorporated into later flags of the confederacy but was not the entire flag.

I used to not like to see it displayed but I came to see it not as a symbol of slavery, but a symbol of states rights against an evergrowing federal government. I suspect most see it differently.

Regardless of what it stands for, I don't care to see any national flag flown unless its below the flag of the USA. (Trump flags are exempt because they are not an official national flag)

As far as all this statue-removing bullshit, its gotten way out of hand. You can't erase the past by just pretending it didnt happen. And I agree with the sentiment above, if Pelosi likes it, its probably a bad idea.
