Computer Access

Wesley...

Your download rate is close to 5Mbps....which is pretty good. High speed DSL is about 3Mbps. Your upload speed is a bit on the slow side. I am guessing you have cable...which normally is rated at 6Mbps download rates...but that is usually dependent on how busy the activity is in your area at a given time. The real point is to compare what you are paying for and make sure you are fairly close. For instance if you were paying extra for super high speed cable which is normally rated at 8Mbps...you could check your speed at different times and if you were constantly seeing the 5Mbps you could call and complain. Hope that helps explain it some...

Laptop on the boat....connect using my cell phone. Downtown Portsmouth just implemented free wifi in the historic area...figures, I am just outside the area....oh well....

Laptop at work on T1, 3 laptops at home on a wireless net with satellite DSL. Also have a smartphone with GPS. Will get a 17" laptop for the boat with wireless card. 17" for the DVDs, of course. :smt024

Desktop (DSL) at work, laptop (wireless cable) at home. BTW, would any of you have any idea why I cannot log on to the Club Searay site on my work desktop? I type in my name & password & nothing happens(the login screen just stays there). Don't have any issues with other forum sites just Club Searay. :smt017 Scott

So no one here is using EVDO?

I am surprised since I assumed the average member of this forum would be ahead of the average internet user.

I bet within two years a significant number of you are using EVDO. No more DSL, no more Road Runner, no more wires, go anywhere your digital cell phone works and have a built in card in the laptop like many have built in WiFi now.

I'm sure coverage is an issue for many. Heck, my SPRINT phone has issues at my house, which is 40 miles outside of D.C.

Good point. Since EVDO is a template over the digital cell system much like DSL is a template over a traditional phone like but at a different frequency if you are in a area where you digital phone will not work your EVDO would not work.

More markets are getting EVDO every month. To be clear, if you can get a digital phone signal you may be able to get an wireless high speed internet connection over this network or you may not depending on where you are. If you can not get a digital signal on the phone for sure you can not get an EVDO signal with that specific carrier.

Scott, which browser are you using? Are you using Microsoft Internet Explorer, or something like Mozilla?
I tried both AOL & IE. Actually had to bring my laptop from home to make this post........Thanks.....Scott

We use my Treo 700W and Active Sync through Bluetooth to connect the laptop and phone together to get access to internet when WiFi hotspots are not available. Cool little program called PdaNet that acts like another DUN connection to the laptop. Nothing like taking your "Home Office" to the boat during the day and still remain productive. :smt024

I'm just starting to look into that. ( I thought my post before had brought this up, but for some reason it didn't comeup with the rest of the msg) For what adding a DSL line to the lakehouse would run I am thinking I could get a card and subscribe. I did have some coverage issues with my cell phone but I added an antenna and repeater in the lakehouse and now get a strong signal. I'm also assuming that would take care of the signal for the laptop card as well. If it does, then I can eliminate the regular home DSL service and the dialup at the lake and be saving money.

I have an EVDO card that fits into a Kyocera router/wifi hub. This allows me to run my own wifi hotspot on the boat. We usually just run one or two laptops, plus a wireless video camera so we can keep an eye on the boat while we are away from it.

The EVDO card (Verizon) works great - so far tested from Boston to New York. The speed is OK as long as you are not loading huge files.

4 desktops at home, all on wireless network, and it's COMCASTIC! at the office 3 desktops, two are on dial-up, but in my business, i dont really need the internet. i have direct tv on the boat (at the dock) and i know someone with a treo down there. that's the extent of my technology at the marina
