Communication issues with 8.1’s

Sent an email to Merc this morning and just received this reply; I will talk to my MMax tech again but we had the scan tool connected while it failed numerous times with no data marks on the scan tool.

Thank you for your email regarding MerCruiser serial number 0W397745. We appreciate the opportunity to respond to your questions.

Patrick, if the single beep you are getting is the same as the warning beep when keyed up, this might be an indication of theengine is loosing ignition key on power and then regaining the ignition key on power. This would be simular to turning the key off and then back on again. This issue can be confirmed by an Authorized MerCruiser Dealer recording this engine data while this is occuring. They can record with CDS G3 and can save and replay therecording looking at this data.

Once the issue is found, they will have to figure out what is causing this. This can take some time in running down the cause.

We hope this information is helpful. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our office at 920-929-5040between the hours of 7:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday, Central Standard Time.

I've had the merc scanner on 3 times with the problem happening while scanner on. Shows no codes, no errors nothing. It's so frustrating.

No. And problem occurred about 6 times with it connected. Showed nothing

I feel your pain and frustration, been there. All I can advise is what I did and it finally went away. Cool Fuel Module replacement program with 2 brand new complete modules, don't think this had anything to do with it - but it something we did along with upgrading to the VV703 and changing out the data comm cables from the computer on the motor to the J boxes behind the dash. This is what i believe fixed it.

Thanks for the help. Cleaned those connections as you suggested. Going out today. If it's still acting up will replace cables.

Where will you order the cables? Did you find the part number??

Thanks

I'm ordering from boaters value in Wyandotte. Numbers are on cable behind dashboard. I took boat out it ran better but still had the same issue just not as frequent.

I think you are on the right track. Hope the cables do the trick. They are actually easy to run to the engine compartment behind the panels. Make sure you get the 2 different lengths or 2 of the longer one that goes to the PORT engine, which is what I did. Fingers Crossed !

Again, thank you so much for the help. Fingers crossed.

Hey all just wanted to share this with you. Sounds like our boats are all around the same year, 2006. I thought I had spilled a little oil in the bilge. Cleaned it up then found more. There is any oil filter adapter on bottom of engine, (just below oil filter). There is a seal in there that just got old. Merc part number 27-91892. Hope this info helps someone.

Thanks, I have a small leak under my stbd motor that i need to investigate in the off season. I will certainly check to see if this is the culprit. K

You can only order from mercury marine. When I called they told me they don't have those anymore and it would have to be upgraded. Suggested I take it to authorized dealer and have them do upgrade. He wasn't convinced this would solve the problem.

Captlori - You need to find another dealer or you can use mine. Washburns in Solomons, MD. (410-326-6701, ask for Mark and mention my name, Kerry. Spoke to them and your part numbers are 84-879981T25 *strbd motor* and 84-879981T30 *port motor* These are the 2 actual cam buss cable part numbers I replaced mine with. They are $101.15 and $116.15 respectively and there are 10 for the Strbd and 6 for the port in stock and available @ the Georgia Merc Warehouse. If you continue to have trouble getting them, you can phone order from Washburns and I will pick them up and UPS to you, no charge. Just drop me a PM. If they order them it would be approx 3-4 days to them and UPS time from MD to your location, as long as you are in the States.

Just realized you have a 380. Your cables may be a bit longer. The number at the end of the part number is the actual length in feet. So may some extra searching to get the correct length.

So appreciate this offer. I'm checking to see if it is same cable. Numbers are the same but my last numbers is A30. Let me investigate and I will get back with you. That is so kind of you. I had called Mercury Marine directly, they are the ones who told me it was obsolete.

Feel free to call Mark. He is the best and Washburn's is top notch. All he needs to make sure he gets you the correct cables is you engine number. The only hurdle would be the length. But no worries, he can get that as well.

Thank you. My local mercury dealer said that is the correct replacement part. They were able to order it for me. Comes in Tues hopefully this takes care of problem. Appreciate everyone's input and assistance.

Here’s a different angle… the awesome Merc tech I have been working with wanted to install remote starters for both motors. So we unplugged the large round plugs on top of each motor that connect to helm ignition and plugged in these remote Merc units (each one with key & horn) fed them into the aft storage lockers. So for the next week I will start the boat using the remotes and so far no RPMdrop/Beep/or lost gauges. Still working on what this actually means…
We are not ruling out the blue CAN net work wires yet.

My mechanic is planning to do something similar this week with my stbd motors. Hopefully it helps us figure out the issue.

Well check this off the list of what did NOT fix the issue. The M/cruiser remote install just moved the beeping noise/RPM serge/gauges-off issue to the remote starters.

Thinking next move will be replacing the blue CAN cables. Looking forward to hearing from Captlori and the results. Running out of boating time in Minnesota.

Thank you
