Comments about Fuel usage

Most of these articles in magazines about "how to save fuel" and "hybrid boats" are just there to sell magazines. I think the CSR members here pointed out the right way to save fuel... understand the performance of your hull and engines and run in the sweet spot.. It's not rocket science. I doubt Mike was too concerned about MPG when he was caught in the thunderstorm this past summer.

What we need are articles on "how to save on insurance" or "how to save on depreciation" or "how to save on dock fees" or "how to save on repairs"

I use whatever computer they make me use. Yep, the YMP is ancient. Wormholes are just a discontinuity of space... you go an inch, you go an inch and then suddenly you go two inches when you thought you were only going to go one. Quarks... perhaps they're made of a really little wormholes, the smallest divisible chunk of space with the ends vibrating... but that's another paper I have to finish writing. Use google and search things like Sea Ray 380 boattest and you should find links right to the page... maybe add 8.1 if you want the gassers. Boating supposed to be fun... push the throttle and love it. Out here we have an insurance company called PEMCO... I have my cars, trucks, house and boat with them for a lot of years. I get discounts for every additional thing I have with them... I get discounts for great credit rating... I get discounts for the many years I've been with them... My premiums are very reasonable. The only way I know to save on depreciation is not to pay too much in the first place. I can't believe the number of two and three year old boats listed for more than you can buy the thing brand new... with no negotiation on one of the many special Sea Ray days. Dock fees... Craigslist.

I have the boattest results for the 380DA with 8.1s. It's saved as a word document. I don't know how to post a word doc here so PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Open the file click on edit and select all, then go to a post right click and select paste and it will post for you.

When I did that, it got all garbled.

Thanks osd9 and jim240 for sending me the information. I am curious about another issue. What is considered red line for the 8.1s engines. Mind you not that I wish to approach anywhere near red line, but I would just like to know about these engines. I cruised up the Atlantic coast for about 110 miles at 3800 RPM and all seemed to run pretty good. To Jacksonville, Florida from just South of Daytona.

Even though these engines will red line at a given point so will a car, but I certainly do not drive my car at red line

The chart on the 2006, 380 goes to 4750 RPM's for that year 8.1s and on the chart for the 2002, 380 it goes to 4500 RPM

Both charts show the sweet spot at 3500 RPM's

So now that I have detailed all of this, what typically is the feeling here about operating above 4000 RPM's from some of you who have the 8.1s engines

Thanks

Howard.

Check your email. I sent you the merc spec sheet for the 8.1s

The limitation may be the transmission. It is on my RX-7, and I've heard the the V-drives limit at 5,000, though I have not been able (or bothered) to confirm this.

Thanks

If you have the standard version 8.1 and not the high output version, you should be propped for a WOT of 4600. It's a GM block as you know and Merc and Crusader both recommend a WOT range of 4400-4800. 4600 is right in the middle. Recommended extended cruising RPM is 75% to 80% of WOT. So, the extended crusing range is 3450 to 3680 RPM. Any extended operation above that range will significantly overload the engine and shorten its life.
