Cold Starting Kohler 5E

Not sure if this helps but the shut down can happen under an Aux input condition. Had this with the CO alarms when service had disconnected the network interface which caused the generator to shut down, got an error message which I traced to an Aux input.

Ok. Sounds good, but what does that mean and how do I look for and remedy the Aux input problem?

Could be a bad CO sensor, or the network that connects them together and to the generator. First check and see if you get and error code on the gen display. If so and it indicates an Aux (AU code I believe...see manual), then take a look as indicated.

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but this boat is new to me and I have the Kohler 5E. Like the OP I have two switches on the panel for the generator. The one to the left simply says "ON" at the top. The toggle switch to the right has "START/RUN" at the top and "STOP/PREHEAT" on the bottom. There is a nicely printed 3 page instruction sheet velcroed to the door. Its instructions say to turn on the "ON/PREHEAT" switch and it has an arrow pointing to the switch on the left as that switch. It then says to press and hold the "START/RUN" until the generator starts and it has an arrow pointing to the switch on the right for that. It says to hold that switch until it starts then let go. Then turn off the "ON/PREHEAT" switch (which is the one to the left and is labeled only "ON" on mine).

So, I think the sequence is correct and there is a mislabeling of the two switches (probably due to the factory trying to use a one size fits all approach to the switch labeling). The word "PREHEAT" should have been on the top of the switch on the left rather than on the bottom of the switch to the right. Or not present at all on either of the switches for this particular generator. Is that correct?
